Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Txumarregi, de 1098 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Es la cota más elevada del cortado de la sierra entre el Puerto de Opakua (1020 m) y el Puerto de Bikuña (1075 m). En el catálogo de montes centenarios de 1950 se señala una cumbre con el nombre "Bikuña", en la pos. 40 de los "Montes de Álava". La altitud corresponde a la cota cercana al "Puerto de Vicuña" según la cartografía vigente en aquel momento (MTN50 139-Eulate, 1929). La revista Pyrenaica en el núm. 1 de 1951, publica un artículo llamado "Ataun y Bikuña en la Sierra de Urbasa", firmado por "Mont-Araz". En esa referencia, ni siquiera se cita el punto culminante Baio, y Bikuña se hace corresponder, a la peña Mirutegi, que en aquella época, no contaba aún con la gran cruz de hierro. No cabe duda que esta última cumbre es más significativa que la que aquí se relata.

Mi ascensión

Divertida ruta y sin apenas complicaciones, salvo algún tramo de pendiente moderada

Salimos desde el pueblo de Vicuña. No he visto aparcamiento público así que hay que intentar dejar el coche sin que moleste a los vecinos. El ascenso es continuo desde el pueblo hasta el puerto de Vicuña, a unos 1050 metros de altitud. Se sube por diferentes tipos de suelo: hormigón, campas, pistas anchas de tierra y hierba, sendas estrechas de tierra, pistas 4x4 de piedras. La orientación es muy fácil, no hay ningún desvío oculto

Los primeros 1600 metros son por zona descubierta pero luego nos adentramos en un bosque de haya y roble que nos va a acompañar todo el camino. La pendiente media de subida es del 10%, con algún tramo corto de 15-20%. Según la época del año puede haber tramos muy embarrados; siempre está la opción de dar un rodeo o pasar por un lateral del lodazal

El día que yo subí había una puerta rota (ver WPT). Aparentemente está bien pero se cae cuando la abres. Cuidado

Una vez que se alcanza el puerto de Vicuña, el camino se aplana y ya sólo queda pasear hasta la cima. Esta parte es la más bonita y gratificante porque discurre por un tranquilo bosque, entre piedras cubiertas de musgo y hayas espectaculares. Se camina por una preciosa sendita estrecha que va junto al cortado que queda a la derecha. A veces, demasiado cerca…



La cima no está marcada más que con una piedra blanca sobre una roca. El día de mi ascenso había bastante niebla y no se veía nada hacia el cortado. En dirección opuesta, hacia el Sur, sólo se ve el hayedo en la niebla. He visto fotos de esta cima y las vistas son muy interesantes



Tras la cima, y en el camino de retorno, se pasa por la cima de otro pico, el Peñarroja (1067 m). Tras este punto se inicia el descenso suavemente. Es tras cruzar una alambrada (ver WPT) cuando el descenso se complica un poco. Los primeros metros tras la alambrada son muy empinados y resbaladizos; hay multitud de sendas. Mi consejo es bajar por donde se vea el camino más fácil y seguro y cuando la pendiente sea menor, buscar la senda correcta hacia el nacimiento del río Zadorra. Pasado este nacimiento, el camino es sencillo hasta Vicuña

En resumen, divertida y fácil ruta, sin mucho esfuerzo y con un paseo muy atractivo desde el puerto de Vicuña hasta pasado el monte Peñarroja (2.4 km)

My ascent

Fun route with hardly any complications, except for some moderately steep sections

We leave from the village of Vicuña. I have not seen public parking so you have to try to leave the car without disturbing the neighbors. The ascent is continuous from the village to the Vicuña pass, at about 1050 meters altitude. It climbs through different types of soil: concrete, fields, wide tracks of dirt and grass, narrow dirt paths, 4x4 tracks of stones. The orientation is very easy, there is no hidden detours

The first 1600 meters are in an open area but then we enter a beech and oak forest that will accompany us all the trail. The average slope of ascent is 10%, with some short stretches of 15-20%. Depending on the time of year there can be very muddy stretches; there is always the option of making a detour or passing through a side of the muddy area

The day I went up there was a broken gate (see WPT). Apparently it's fine but it falls down when you open it. Beware

Once you reach the Vicuña pass, the trail flattens out and all that's left is to walk to the top. This part is the most beautiful and rewarding because it runs through a quiet forest, between moss-covered rocks and spectacular beech trees. You walk along a beautiful narrow trail that goes along the cut that is on the right. Sometimes, too close...



The summit is only marked with a white stone atop a rock. On the day of my ascent it was quite foggy and nothing could be seen towards the cut. In the opposite direction, to the south, you can only see the beech forest in the fog. I have seen photos of this peak and the views are very interesting



After the summit, and on the return trail, you pass the summit of another peak, the Peñarroja (1067 m). After this point the descent begins gently. It is after crossing a wire fence (see WPT) when the descent becomes a bit more complicated. The first few meters after the wire fence are very steep and slippery; there are a multitude of paths. My advice is to go down where the trail is easier and safer and when the slope is less steep, look for the correct path to the source of the Zadorra River. After this source, the trail is easy until Vicuña

In summary, fun and easy route, without much effort and with a very attractive walk from the port of Vicuña until after the Peñarroja mountain (2.4 km)
