Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Atauko Haitza, de 1103 metros

Esta cota se distingue bien desde el valle de Asparrena y desde las campas de Legaire, así como desde Mirutegi. No se debe confundir con la cercana elevación de Surbe (1157 m)

El azadón que hay en la cima ha sido colocado por un grupo de alumnos de Escolapias de Vitoria-Gasteiz, que se desplazan en excursión al lugar para plantar el pino que decora el aula durante las navidades. Algunas veces plantan en la zona del Baio, otras en Mirutegi o en las bordas de Legaire, pero siempre cruzando el portillo de Atau, por lo que allí, en la cercana peña que hace de mirador sobre el valle han dejado el azadón estropeado que han utilizado durante años

Mi ascensión

Corta pero entretenida ascensión, saliendo desde el pueblo de San Román de San Millán. Esta población tiene un aparcamiento público de hierba a la salida del pueblo, al Sur

La cima la vamos a encontrar nada más superar el portillo de Atau, a escasos 70 metros, así que esta ascensión consiste básicamente en llegar al portillo de Atau y sobrepasarlo

La subida no tiene complicaciones en cuanto al terreno pero hay que estar pendiente de los desvíos y cruces porque hay multitud de sendas y caminos que se cruzan unos con otros y pueden despistarnos. Las pistas son en su mayor parte a través de bosque, de tierra y hierba, más o menos anchas, pero cómodas de caminar. En el WPT “Dejar pista por la izquierda” se debe tomar una senda muy poco visible que se intuye a la izquierda

Llegando al portillo hay algún tramo de suelo de roca que puede incluso hacer necesario trepar un poco con las manos porque existen pendientes del 35%. Aquí las rocas pueden ser resbaladizas si están mojadas. Es más sencillo bajar el portillo que subirlo porque al descender se ven mejor las distintas sendas y se puede escoger fácilmente la más adecuada. En conjunto, toda la subida es muy bonita, esforzada en algún punto pero muy bonita

Traspasar el portillo es como entrar en otro mundo. Por delante tenemos una extensa campa verde, con el gran Mirutegi (1167 m) a nuestra derecha, con su característica cruz. A la izquierda tenemos en Surbe (1157 m). Nuestra cima, el Atauko Haitza, es un pequeño promontorio rocoso donde el viento puede soplar bastante fuerte. Está sobre el cortado y no tiene ningún buzón ni marca. De lo que no queda nada es de la azada que dejaron los alumnos de Escolapias de Vitoria y que se ve en alguna foto. Las vistas al Norte no son especialmente atractivas porque está la ruidosa autovía Vitoria-Pamplona. Al Sur tenemos esa gran campa, el raso de Legaire, con sus conocidos monumentos megalíticos



El regreso hasta San Román se hace por un camino distinto (salvo los primeros metros). Este descenso es cómodo aunque puede haber árboles caídos cortando la senda. Hay que emboscarse un poco para rodearlos

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Atauko Haitza, 1103 meters high

This elevation is well distinguished from the valley of Asparrena and from the fields of Legaire, as well as from Mirutegi. It should not be confused with the nearby Surbe elevation (1157 m)

The hoe on the summit has been placed by a group of students from Escolapias of Vitoria-Gasteiz, who go on excursions to the site to plant the pine tree that decorates the classroom during the Christmas season. Sometimes they plant in the Baio area, other times in Mirutegi or in the Legaire borders, but always crossing the Atau gate, so there, on the nearby crag that serves as a viewpoint over the valley, they have left the damaged hoe that they have used for years

My ascent

Short but entertaining ascent, leaving from the village of San Román de San Millán. This town has a public lawn parking at the exit of the village, to the south

We will find the summit just after overcoming the Atau pass, at barely 70 meters, so this ascent basically consists of arriving at the Atau pass and overcoming it

The ascent is uncomplicated in terms of terrain but we must be aware of detours and crossings because there are many paths and trails that intersect with each other and can mislead us. The trails are mostly through forest, dirt and grass, more or less wide, but comfortable to walk. In the WPT "Leave track on the left" you must take a very inconspicuous path that you can intuit on the left

Arriving at the pass there is a stretch of rocky ground that may even make it necessary to climb a little with your hands because there are slopes of 35%. Here the rocks can be slippery if they are wet. It is easier to descend the pass than to climb it because, when descending, you can see better the different paths and you can easily choose the most suitable one. Overall, the whole climb is very nice, tiring at some points but very nice

Crossing the pass is like entering another world. Ahead we have an extensive green field, with the great Mirutegi (1167 m) to our right, with its characteristic cross. To the left we have Surbe (1157 m). Our summit, Atauko Haitza, is a small rocky promontory where the wind can blow quite strong. It is on the cut and has no letterbox or marker. There is nothing left of the hoe left by the students of Escolapias de Vitoria, which can be seen in some pictures. The views to the north are not particularly attractive because of the noisy Vitoria-Pamplona highway. To the south we have that great grassland, the Legaire plain, with its well known megalithic monuments



The return to San Román is by a different trail (except for the first few meters). This descent is comfortable although there may be fallen trees cutting the path. It is necessary to ambush a little to go around them

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
