Esta cumbre de los Montes de Iturrieta apenas presenta un relieve diferenciado y queda enmarcada por los puertos de Larredez (1070 m) y Alangua (1083 m), existiendo, en consecuencia, un escaso desnivel que la defina sobre la regular cresta que se prolonga entre los montes Santa Elena (1110 m) y Arrigorrista (1149 m). Se ha apuntado que Larredez podría tener origen en "Las Redes" (Los rediles), pero está documentado (1752) "Larreder", Larra-eder, prado hermoso

Los términos Larredez y Atxuri suelen considerarse, muchas veces, sinónimos para designar la cima en la que se sustenta el vértice geodésico llamado "Achuri". Parece, sin embargo, que Atxuri es la siguiente cota del cortado hacia el E, justo antes del puerto de Alangua (1076 m), llamada por el IGN Peña de Alangua (1089 m). La denominación Atxuri podría, entonces, tener relación con la tonalidad del peñascal bajo la cumbre y que es conocido con el nombre de peñas de Atxokolarri. Según manda la tradición, fue la cantera con que las brujas de Lezao construyeron el dolmen de Sorginetxe

Esta cumbre ha formado parte del catálogo de cumbres de Euskal Herria en 1950 y en 1982 (no figurando en la edición de 1956). Al final (1990) fue desplazada del catálogo al ser una cumbre poco característica. Pese a todo, es un excelente mirador en el largo recorrido entre las cumbres más significativas de Santa Elena (1109 m) y Arrigorrista (1149 m), esta última muy cercana ya al Alto de Opakua (1020 m). Presenta corte hacia el Norte por lo que el acceso desde Egileor (666 m) o Alangua (693 m) debe efectuarse accediendo a los olvidados collados de San Juan, Larredez y Alangua

Mi ascensión

Fácil ruta que sale del pueblo de Alangua, cerca de Salvatierra. En Alangua, junto a la iglesia, hay un parking con capacidad para 4 coches donde se puede aparcar el vehículo

Esquemáticamente, la ruta consiste en ascender a las crestas de Iturrieta por el puerto de Alangua, caminar por el cortado, hacer cima, continuar hasta el puerto de San Juan, descender hasta Eguileor y cerrar caminando por la carretera hasta Alangua

La ruta no tiene especial complicación en cuanto a pendientes ya que no pasan de 22% excepto en algunos tramos muy cortos y puntuales. El tipo de pista es fácil de andar pero puede estar muy embarrada si ha llovido mucho recientemente

En cuanto a orientación, la pista y los desvíos son casi siempre visibles. Sólo después del WPT “Alambrada” la senda deja de verse claramente. Es una zona de pendiente fuerte, entre hayas, que tiene multitud de trazas de sendas y arroyos. Lo mejor es orientarse hacia el WPT “Puerto de Alangua” hasta llegar a la parte superior de la cresta de Iturrieta, eligiendo los pasos más sencillos. Este tramo, aun sin senda, no es complicado; sólo requiere un poquito de esfuerzo. El día de mi ascensión había una fina capa de nieve que ocultaba más si cabe cualquier vereda

Al llegar al puerto de Alangua se termina la ascensión y ya sólo queda ir coronando una serie de cimas de menor cota hasta llegar al objetivo de la salida, el monte Larredez, de 1104 metros de altitud. Esta cima se encuentra sobre una cornisa rocosa, asomándose al Norte sobre la población de Salvatierra y el valle de Sakana. Hacia el Sur nos encontramos con la planicie que lleva a Roitegui y Onraita. La cima tiene un par de buzones montañeros y un vértice geodésico



La bajada es por el puerto de San Juan así que tenemos que seguir caminando hacia el Oeste, pasando por otras cimas de menor cota. En el puerto de San Juan está la famosa y bonita estela de las cruces



La bajada desde el puerto de San Juan hasta Eguileor no tiene ninguna complicación. Cabe señalar que toda esta ruta tiene tramos de bosque que no están muy limpios, al menos el día de mi ascensión. Todas estas ramas y troncos caídos sobre la senda nos obligan a tener que desviarnos de ella, entre la maleza, para rodear los obstáculos

Una vez llegado a las proximidades de Eguileor no queda otra que caminar algo más de un kilómetro por la carretera hasta llegar al aparcamiento de Alangua

En resumen, sencilla ruta con un montón de cimas, de esfuerzo medio y sin apenas complicaciones en lo relativo a orientación

This summit of the Iturrieta Mountains hardly presents a differentiated relief and it is framed by the Larredez (1070 m) and Alangua (1083 m) passes, existing, consequently, a scarce unevenness that defines it on the regular ridge that extends between the Santa Elena (1110 m) and Arrigorrista (1149 m) mountains. It has been suggested that Larredez could have its origin in "Las Redes" (Los rediles), but it is documented (1752) as "Larreder", Larra-eder, beautiful meadow

The terms Larredez and Atxuri are often considered synonyms to designate the peak on which the geodesic vertex called "Achuri" stands. It seems, however, that Atxuri is the next elevation of the cut to the E, just before the Alangua pass (1076 m), called by the IGN Peña de Alangua (1089 m). The name Atxuri could be related to the color of the rocky outcrop below the summit, which is known as the Atxokolarri rocky outcrop. According to the tradition, it was the quarry with which the witches of Lezao built the dolmen of Sorginetxe

This summit has been part of the catalog of summits of Euskal Herria in 1950 and 1982 (not appearing in the 1956 edition). In the end (1990) it was removed from the catalog as it was not a very characteristic summit. Nevertheless, it is an excellent viewpoint on the long route between the most significant summits of Santa Elena (1109 m) and Arrigorrista (1149 m), the latter being very close to the Alto de Opakua (1020 m). It has a cut to the north so that access from Egileor (666 m) or Alangua (693 m) must be made by accessing the forgotten passes of San Juan, Larredez and Alangua

My ascent


Easy route that leaves from the village of Alangua, near Salvatierra. In Alangua, next to the church, there is a parking lot with capacity for 4 cars where you can park your vehicle

Schematically, the route consists of ascending to the crests of Iturrieta by the Alangua pass, walking along the cut, making the summit, continuing to the San Juan pass, descending to Eguileor and closing the route by walking along the road to Alangua

The route has no special complication in terms of slopes as they do not exceed 22% except in some very short and punctual sections. The type of track is easy to walk but can be very muddy if it has rained a lot recently

In terms of orientation, the track and the detours are almost always visible. Only after the WPT "Wire fence" the trail is no longer clearly visible. It is a steeply sloping area, between beech trees, which has a multitude of traces of trails and streams. It is best to head towards the WPT "Alangua pass" until you reach the top of the Iturrieta ridge, choosing the easiest passes. This section, even without a path, is not complicated; it just requires a little effort. On the day of my ascent there was a thin layer of snow that hid any trail even more if possible

When you reach the Alangua pass, the ascent is over and all that remains is to crown a series of lower peaks until you reach the goal of the trip, Mount Larredez, at an altitude of 1104 meters. This peak is located on a rocky cornice, overlooking the town of Salvatierra and the Sakana valley to the north. To the south we find the plain that leads to Roitegui and Onraita. The summit has a couple of mountain mailboxes and a geodesic vertex



The descent is through the San Juan pass so we have to continue walking west, passing other lower peaks. In the San Juan pass is the famous and beautiful stele of the crosses



The descent from the San Juan pass to Eguileor has no complications. It should be noted that this entire route has stretches of forest that are not very clean, at least on the day of my ascent. All these branches and fallen trunks on the path force us to have to deviate from it, between the undergrowth, to go around the obstacles

Once arrived at the vicinity of Eguileor there is nothing left to do but walk a little more than a kilometer along the road until we reach the parking lot of Alangua

In summary, a simple route with a lot of peaks, of medium effort and with hardly any complications in terms of orientation
