According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Montemayor, 1104 meters high
Description of the mountain (extracted from www.mendikat.net):
Summit of the Arlamo or Arkamu mountain range, which delimits the Koartango Valley to the south. The N. slope presents important calcareous walls, reason why only by some passages or passes it is possible to reach the summit. The S. slope is softer and is covered by the holm oak forest
The river Baias after bathing the valley of Koartango makes its way between the mountains of Arkamo and Badaia through a small and spectacular gorge called Tetxa (545 m). The original name would be Atetxa (from Euskera, gate), but the voice has lost the initial "a" so the word is more similar to the Castilian term Techo (roof), and the fact is that the gorge is quite narrow and it is barely possible to see the sky, as if it had a roof... The river, the local road, the highway and the train stick together in an attempt to enter the narrow canyon, as happens in other degraded gorges: Pancorbo, Dos Hermanas de Irurtzun, etc
In the past it has been frequent to confuse the summits of Montemayor (1103 m) and Cotorrillo/Kotorrillo (1084 m), of similar altitude although separated a little more than 1.5 km from each other by the portillo de Onzejo (1043 m), a name that fits precisely to an open pass between two mountains. The summit of Kotorrillo (1084 m) is the one that rises on the E. side of the sierra, actually to the SE of the pass, and is marked by a geodesic vertex. On the W. side is the summit of Azkorri (1094 m), on whose two summits are antennas. To the W. of this elevation is finally the summit of Montemayor (1103 m). The highest peak in the surrounding area is actually 2 km from Montemayor and is Fraile (1106 m), in the vicinity of which there is a cave
My ascent
Simple ascent to Montemayor mountain (1104 m) leaving from the village of Jokano. In the village, next to the cemetery, there is a place where you can leave the car
As soon as we start walking we enter a forest of pines, beeches and oaks that will accompany us to the Oncejo pass. The track is easy to follow but has a slope that will remain constant at around 18% until you reach the pass, 2500 meters ahead. At a given moment we have to leave the wide track and take a narrower path that goes off to the left (see WPT) but, shortly after, we return to the wide track
The forest and the ascent end when we reach the Oncejo pass, giving way to a green plain, very easy to walk and that shows us the two large antennas, known as the Montemayor relay antennas. This moor has no visible path but it is easy to find your way to the antennas. In some sections we walk very close to the cut so we must be cautious in foggy conditions or slippery ground. Approaching the first of the antennas, we came across a stone track for 4x4, for the technicians who service the antennas
We continue along the path that passes next to the larger of the two antennas, for about 650 meters, until we reach the point where we have to turn off to the right to summit. This point is marked with a stone milestone. The climb to the summit has no path but it is easy to follow thanks to the numerous stone milestones that mark the trail
The summit has a striking red letterbox. I can't say much about the views because on the day of my ascent it was quite foggy, apart from some snow. In any case, it is a limestone karst area with no trees, totally clear except for some isolated bushes. There is also at the top the ruins of an old stone shelter
The descent from the summit is made by its west face, through a wasteland with no apparent path, towards a pond, to reach shortly after a 4x4 path. The descent is made further on through the Riscamala pass and the 4x4 trail that is followed after the pool takes us to this pass. However, I have invented a shortcut (see WPT) that shortens this section by about 2 kilometers. The shortcut does not have any kind of indication and is done through a fairly dense area of bushes. It is not complicated to walk this trail but requires a bit of care. The reference to follow is that of the WPT of the Riscamala pass. If you prefer not to take the shortcut, follow the points WPT 1, WPT 2, WPT 3 and WPT 4
The spot of Riscamala pass is very beautiful. Here begins a very entertaining, beautiful and interesting descent. In the first 300 meters there is a series of Z-curves that run along a very narrow dirt path with a gradient of -20%. It is not complicated but requires a minimum of attention
The rest of the descent is simple and very quiet, through green and relaxed forest, until you reach the vicinity of the village of Villamanca. Before the village we must take a right to follow a track that will lead us to Jokano. The alternative to this track is an asphalt road for almost 3 kilometers
The first part of the track from Villamanca to Jokano is easy, it is a wide 4x4 track that ascends about 160 meters of slope until you reach a point where we will leave the track to get into the forest, looking for a wire fence (see WPT). When you reach the fence, follow it down, without passing it. This descent is very steep (-40%) and there is no visible trail. There are many thorny weeds on the ground and it is easy to tangle and fall. The reference is always to follow the wire fence. This steep descent continues for 250 meters until you reach a new wide track and a metal gate, which you have to cross. This descent is one of those that I call "descent wild boar style". After the gate, there are no complications until you reach the car
In summary, it is an interesting route that has a couple of points to watch out for: the shortcut to the Riscamala pass and the descent along the wire fence on the way back. Otherwise, enjoy the trail
