Pequeña cumbre de las Peñas de Arangio o Peñas de Etxaguen, muy cercana a Orisol (1128 m), que es la cima principal de la que apenas se diferencia pues se halla a corta distancia, mediando entre ambas el collado Arri-aundijak (1096 m). Se trata pues de la antecima Sur del Orisol. Cercana a la cumbre, más hacia el sur queda la ermita de Santikurutz (1056 m) que le da nombre. Hacia el S. después de la ermita se encuentran las peñas de Hirumalleta (1033 m) y un herboso collado que da paso a la herbosa loma del Kastillue (1036 m), con restos carlistas

La cumbre se ha considerado para el concurso de los cien montes en las primeras ediciones, anteriores a la guerra civil, como el catálogo de montes del C.D. Eibar con el nombre Santigurutz-Arangio (relación que también incluye la cercana cima de Oriol con el nombre Arangio). Existe la posibilidad de que la cota considerada entonces fuese la propia ermita, más que el verdadero punto culminante que se eleva más al N

La cima es una abrupta zona de lapiaz que pasa desapercibida para el montañero que desde el Puerto de Krutzeta (692 m) asciende a Orisol (1127 m), si bien el sendero pasa a escasa distancia de su mismo vértice

Mi ascensión

Sencilla y corta ruta que comienza en la ermita de San Cristóbal, en el parque de Urkiola. La ermita se encuentra antes del punto kilométrico 25 de la carretera A-3941, dirección Norte. Delante de la ermita, en el lado izquierdo de la carretera, hay un amplio espacio de aparcamiento para muchos vehículos

La ermita, escondida en un hayedo, es un bonito punto de arranque de la ruta que comienza tras caminar unos metros por la carretera A-3941. Unos 100 metros antes de llegar al indicador del punto kilométrico 25, sale un camino ascendente por la derecha, de tierra. Esa es la pista a seguir. No equivocarse con la senda que sale junto a los puestos de caza



El ascenso no tiene ninguna dificultad de orientación hasta llegar a la cima del Santikurutz, donde hay que elegir bien la senda. La primera parte es a través de un bosque, principalmente de pinos. La pendiente media aquí es del orden de 12%. Tras pasar una borda, el bosque empieza a abrirse y el camino ya está descubierto

Continuamos por la pista de grava hasta encontrarnos con una senda estrecha de roca y tierra (ver WPT) que continúa ascendiendo por la derecha. En un momento dado, abandonamos la senda para visitar lo que parece que es un puesto defensivo de la guerra carlista. Se aprecia como un parapeto hecho con rocas, para defenderse de los disparos del enemigo. Bajar a ver este puesto defensivo se hace sin senda visible, por una ladera con hierba y helechos. Tras este corto desvío, volvemos a la senda original en dirección a la cima del monte Kastillo (1036 m). En las inmediaciones de esta despejada cima también hay alguna trinchera defensiva. Esta cima no tiene demasiado interés salvo por las vistas del parque de Urkiola. Desde aquí se divisa claramente la ermita de Santikurutz y la cima del mismo nombre, a donde vamos a continuación



Bajamos del Kastillo por un pequeño prado verde, orientándonos hacia la ermita de Santikurutz. Nos tenemos que meter de nuevo en el hayedo, por una senda de tierra que está a la izquierda de un gran árbol caído. El acceso a la ermita tiene un corto tramo de pendiente 25%. Esta pequeña ermita se encuentra sobre una cresta, con unas vistas espectaculares



Desde aquí hasta la cima del Santikurutz todo es por suelo roca, sin una pista clara. Existen algunas marcas rojas y blancas de pintura que ayudan a orientarse. Caminar por aquí requiere cierta habilidad y por eso he clasificado esta ruta de dificultad moderada. Se camina despacio, eligiendo bien la pisada por el lapiaz. Según nos acercamos a la cima, mi consejo es sobrepasarlo por el Norte y no atacar la subida desde el Sur. Por el Norte el acceso es mucho más fácil y no hay que trepar por las rocas. Ya en la cima, tenemos un pequeño hito que marca la cumbre. Es una zona despejada y rocosa con unas vistas que hacen que el esfuerzo merezca la pena. Si el día está claro se distingue hasta Vitoria





El retorno hasta el aparcamiento se realiza por el mismo camino que la subida

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

Small summit of the Peñas de Arangio or Peñas de Etxaguen, very close to Orisol (1128 m), which is the main peak from which it hardly differs because it is a short distance away, mediating between them the Arri-aundijak col (1096 m). My ascent

Simple and short route that begins at the hermitage of San Cristobal, in the Urkiola Park. The hermitage is located before kilometer point 25 of the A-3941 road, heading north. In front of the hermitage, on the left side of the road, there is a large parking area for many vehicles

The hermitage, hidden in a beech forest, is a nice starting point of the trail that begins after walking a few meters along the A-3941 road. About 100 meters before reaching the signpost at kilometer point 25, there is an uphill trail on the right, a dirt track. This is the track to follow. Do not make a mistake with the path that comes out next to the hunting posts



The ascent has no difficulty of orientation until you reach the top of Santikurutz, where you have to choose the right path. The first part is through a forest, mainly of pine trees. The average slope here is about 12%. After passing a hut, the forest begins to open up and the trail is now uncovered

We continue along the gravel track until we meet a narrow rock and dirt path (see WPT) that continues ascending on the right. At one point, we leave the path to visit what appears to be a defensive position of the Carlist war. It can be seen as a parapet made of rocks to defend against enemy fire. To go down to see this defensive outpost is done without a visible path, through a slope with grass and ferns. After this short detour, we return to the original path towards the summit of Mount Kastillo (1036 m). In the vicinity of this clear summit there is also some defensive trench. This summit is of little interest except for the views of Urkiola Park. From here you can clearly see the hermitage of Santikurutz and the peak of the same name, where we go next



We descend from Kastillo through a small green meadow, orienting ourselves towards the hermitage of Santikurutz. We have to get back into the beech forest, along a dirt path that is to the left of a large fallen tree. The access to the hermitage has a short 25% slope. This small hermitage sits on a ridge, with spectacular views



From here to the top of Santikurutz it is all on rocky ground, with no clear track. There are some red and white paint markings to help with orientation. Walking here requires some skill and that is why I have classified this trail of moderate difficulty. You walk slowly, choosing your footing well through the lapiaz. As we approach the summit, my advice is to go over it from the north and not attack the climb from the south. From the north the access is much easier and there is no need to climb the rocks. Already at the top, we have a small milestone that marks the summit. It is a clear and rocky area with views that make the effort worthwhile. If the day is clear you can see as far as Vitoria





The return to the parking is done by the same trail as the ascent
