Itinerary description

The classic route par excellence in the Albanian alps, trekking from Valbonë to theth. 🇦🇱
After arriving in Valbonë the day before, making the entire trip from Shkoder, minibus to Lake Koman, ferry from Koman to Fierzë and another minibus from Fierzë to Valbonë. This entire journey cost us 25 euros and was managed from our hotel in Shkoder, Hotel Epoka. They were very kind and prepared a picnic for us to take away, since the minibus picked us up at 6.30 at the hotel. In total, it took about 6 hours to get to Valbonë.
In Valbonë we stayed in the Skender Selimaj guesthouse, very good views from the room and 3km from the start of the trek (one of the closest guesthouses to the start although from what we read there are many guesthouses that take you to the beginning of the route). In our case it was not a problem to do 3km more since the landscape was wonderful.
Therefore, the starting point marked on this route is from our guesthouse but the starting point of the trek is marked with a waypoint.
At 7 am we loaded backpacks with 2 liters of water per head and started walking. It was mid-September and the harsh summer heat was no longer there. It is also advisable to get up early to make the climb without much sun, otherwise it can be very overwhelming. In any case, there is plenty of shade along the way to shelter from the sun.
The route does not have any difficulty other than the slope since we are talking about more than 800m of slope. I have set the difficulty to moderate since it does not have any complicated steps, although for people who are not used to walking in the mountains it can be quite demanding.
After the first 6 km, the climb begins, which seems easier than expected, since there are points of shade, rest, and the slope is not so pronounced. At km 8.5 we find the last café where we can refill our bottles, from this point there will be no more until the descent.
👁️ BEWARE! 👁️
- It is recommended to start this route before 8AM in summer, since it is quite hot.
- It is important to carry at least 2L of water, since although there are many natural sources along the way, we must have reserve water.
- You must have good mountain shoes, near the summit there are some slightly complicated steps.
- The path is clean and clearly marked.
❗RECOMMENDATIONS! ❗
- We stayed at Magic Space Petros Skafias. Maria, our host, the kindest, most loving and funniest woman we have met in all of Albania. About 20 minutes to the town (I believe it is one of the closest accommodations to the center)
- The buses to Shkodra leave, in summer and theoretically, at 10 and 12.
- It is advisable to stay an extra day in Theth and the next day take the route that goes to Blue Eye.
