Itinerary description
This route was organized by the Diputación de Málaga. We went by bus from Malaga to Algatocín. The first part of the route is a fairly steep descent and it is more difficult than seems in the profile of the route. After overcoming this challenge, the route runs through forest roads and paths though the woods. This is a forest landscape, with diverse types of tree, especially cork and other oaks, but also chestnut trees and resin pines. We passed through Benarrabá without stopping, before starting another very steep descent, followed by a steep climb perfectly named “The Ascent out of Hell". We arrived at the pool in the Prado de la Escribana (Meadow of the Scribe, probably named after the local legal person who drew up the deed of sale for land, property and businesses) which was a watering hole for the livestock trails that passed through here at the mouth of the river Almáchar. There are also ruins of flour and olive oil mills. After the endless climb we arrive at Genalguacil. Carlos, the expert guide of the area, explained the history and relevance of the chestnut and cork oak cultivation. Also, the fact that in the past it was like an industrial estate where millers, cattlemen, tanners, charcoal manufacturers, cork-harvesters and mule drivers worked daily to earn a living, and the importance of Gibraltar as the final destination of the route. Along the route there are beautiful views of the Genal valley and the municipalities of Algatocín. Benarrabá, Jubrique and Genalguacil. Despite what they say in many publications, this route of about 11km, is more than “moderate” and I would categorise it as "moderate difficult" especially for the "not so young".
