Itinerary description
Good to know: no need for a car to do this hike. If youre not afraid to wake up early, use public transportation from PDL, bus to Nordeste at 6.45am and get off at Algarvia (arrival around 8.20am), return from Povoação at 4pm (schedules sept 2016). Walking relatively fast, but stopping a few times, I made it in less than 6 hrs.
Way up to the pico is easy and popular.
The way down from Planalto dos Graminhais natural reserve to Madeira Velha was adventurous, but worth it. The path is not dangerous, but it has not been cleared for ages and almost disappears under bushes, nasty thorny ones in some areas. It might also be slippery. I was wearing shorts, and my legs have been scratched quite a lot.... My advise: wear pants!
Otherwise, splendid landscapes and nature, and nobody around. At the end of the hike, Vila da Povoação is a lovely town to have a drink, or a swim in the harbour.
