Itinerary description
The walk leads to the Upper Genal Valley with spectacular views of the valley itself, the many white villages, and the white mountain peaks of the Serrania de Ronda. (Partly PR-A 238) The walk goes through the village and begin descending, firstly on a concrete track and then through a forest on narrow but safe paths to the bottom of the first valley. After crossing a ford the first climb goes quite steeply up.
Continuing on a steep climb on a path strewn with acorns goes through 2 further gates and proceeds onwards to Benalauria where there is possibility for lunch in the main square. Leaving Benalauria the path descends to another valley bottom and then climbing up before reaching a wide track that climbs gradually upwards to Benadalid. Here you pass on the left a very old chestnut tree, the“Castano de Mataquince” where 15 people were executed at the beginning of the Spanish civil war. There are wonderful views throughout most of the walk, and well worth the extra effort needed on the two accents.
Some of the ascents and descents are a bit steep, but there is nothing technically difficult, if your legs and lungs are sound.
