Dramatic ascent of the mountain Alkurruntz (967m) starting at the bar of Mendialde on the N21A in Amaiur. The path crosses over a bubbling brook before heading up out of the valley (with impressive views of Amaiur and the ruins of el Castillo de Amaiur). The path then enters into a glade of tumbledown bordas (with megalithic burial mounds documented on the nearby col). Here it climbs up the spur to meet a wider track that slowly circle Alkurruntz. As the path climbs over the shoulder between the Baztan and Oribidea Valleys there is an easy 20 minute out and back ascent to the summit (967m) which passes the entrance to an old war bunker running the length of the mountain. Returning back down to the shoulder the path picks its way along the northern flank of Alkurruntz with dramatic views of the Atlantic and France. As the path veers south again it comes to an area of dramatic dolmens, forming stark silhouettes against the background of the Baztan Valley before heading abruptly downhill piecing its way through rocky outcrops. When it regains the track that circles Alkurruntz we follow it back to where we pick up the same path that drops down towards the borda and Mendialde on the outskirts of Amaiur.
