Itinerary description
We started from San Lazzaro to do the path of the Gods trail. It was easy to follow and gorgeous as you can see. Beware that once you reach Nochelle, the path continues with what they call the "old trail" (to the right there will be a sign when you go down left after entering the village) so ensure you keep to that one for more excellent views. If not, you'll just end at the bottom near the highway and you'll end up in Positano but with perhaps not as good views from the top :)
We didn't actually go to Positano as we weren't interested in visiting the town. Sure it has history but not our type of place to hang (given it's just an expensive place for rich people). We took a quick snack break and turned back. My partner went back to San Lazzaro but for me, I felt I had so much time to explore so I went up to, what was my original plan, Monti di Mezzo. The way there is relatively easy if you stay on the trail. You will notice that on my way up, I diverted into what was a sleeping point for goats. I thought I was following the trail but it was not. Although it provided amazing views from east of the coast to west, I had to traverse dangerous parts and someone with little experience would not cope. So I suggest skipping this part :)
I first went up to Monti Catello as I wanted get a look at the view and it seemed so near. Going to the top, it's marked with paint but no true trail. As long as you keep going up safely, you'll get there. Once at the top, I didn't want to go back around so I could continue to Monti di Mezzo so I improvised a way down to the trail fork as a shortcut. I don't recommend doing this if you're not experienced as it's very steep with a big drop down. So be extra careful if you do. Once down, I changed my mind on climbing Monti di Mezzo as I had seen Monti S. Michele (not realizing it was the highest point in the Amalfi peninsula!) so I went for that instead. It added an extra 2.5 km (one way) but it was worth it. The trail is marked with paint but sometimes you feel you've lost it but then a paint marking saves you and you know you're on the right track! Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with views of Napoli to the north (and Mount Vesuvius), if it's a clear day, and the coast line to the south :)
The way down was relatively easy to follow as well. Markings are in good condition. Two thirds of the trail was not; the bush was a bit overgrown and there was lots of stinging nettle! So good luck skipping all those haha! Long hike and lots of vertical gain so it could be split up into two. But I loved the challenge and the view. Happy trails!
