Itinerary description
This circular walk over the ridgetop of Ameztia, involving little more than a relaxed 250m climb to the summit. After a gentle ascent away from the hamlet past farms, mountain bordas and their well-kept meadows the open lands along the ridge quickly allow 360 degree panoramic views. Towards the east one sees the Baztan Valley and the French border at Izpegi and to the north and west the dramatic granite outcrops of Zubieta and Lotzabien. The extreme western tip of the walk passes the farm of Azkarateko Borda (commonly known as ‘Mindegia’ after the name of its owner a famous - at times infamous - Basque aizkolari (log chopping) champion). From Mindegia the walker has two options: either to circle back homewards along a lower even path, past hunting lodges with extensive views towards Urrotz or to continue westwards on another dramatic ridge top loop to Saldias. (Highly recommended).
