Itinerary description
At first glance, Auburn River NP (40km west of Mundubbera) appears to be average and not worth the trip. It has two official tracks of 800m & 1.6km to the lookouts and down to the river bed, which are very easy walks. The views from the "Gorge Lookouts" arent spectacular so you must go down and explore the riverbed. Being such short walks, we decided to go off track and checkout the river bed, between the two lookouts. This area has some of the most amazing errored rock formations, waterfalls and rock pools. There are plenty of great features and swim holes to explore at the end of the "River Bed Track". We boulder hopped 3km long the off track section of the riverbed (between the two lookouts). Only try that section if you are competent with rock and boulder hopping/ climbing as it can be dangerous, especially if wet. We were fortunate to visit the area after rainfall and so the waterfalls and swim holes were amazing. Note, they maybe stagnant and unpleasant in drier times.
