Itinerary description
This is a scenic route that takes you from the riverbed of the Gaià, through woodland and vineyards, up to the highest point of the Tarragonés to La torre del Moro de Montferri.
!!! Be aware that there is no reception at the beginning of the trail so make sure that you have downloaded both map and route beforehand.
Shortly after leaving the parking area, you cross the river Gaià via an awkwardly positioned wooden bridge and follow the path heading upwards. As the route climbs the view opens with the plane of fields, villages, and industrial compounds, stretching below.
After about 35 minutes the path forks, and you take the path to the right which cuts trough some beautiful vineyards, passing a lovely little stone shed and an old masia, until it reaches a rugged outcrop with a relatively steep climb to the Torre del Moro del Montferri.
If you ignore the electricity pylon, the last stretch up to the tower is wonderful and the views are stunning. The tower was first documented in 1011 and was build to guard the western limits of the area conquered by the christian "reconquest" from the Muslim forces.
The descend from the Torre del Moro del Montferri is the only tasking stretch as the terrain is very loose and it's easy to slip (the horrid metal posts which have been put alongside do not help). The rest of the hike is easy and takes you downhill through the organic vineyards belonging to Cava Reverté, woodland, across the river Gaià and back to the starting point.
