The Chapel
The chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe at the top of the island. It is believed the first hermitage was built in the 9th century. It became a convent, was abandoned, burned down, attacked more than once, and rebuilt several times. This current church dates back to 1886.

The flysch
As the opening of the Bay is Biscay slowed (some 60 million years ago), this area became the bed of a deep and tranquil sea, where layers of limestone, marl and sandstone were deposited in horizontal layers.
