Barranco Blanco Revisited
This linear walk goes down to the waterfalls in Barranco Blanco. It’s been a few years since my last visit.
I took a detour using a path to the right which is uphill all the way (about 20 minutes) and is a good shortcut to the Cerro Alaminos Mirador.
Getting to the first waterfall, which has very little water at the moment is on a downhill road all the way. The climb down to the waterfall is not easy. There are some large rocks to climb down, and the same to climb back up. Only attempt it if you are agile. The main waterfall was a trickle but there was a small one to the left filling the two pools of clear water.
The river walk section starts on the right. Firstly follow the large water pipe covered in concrete. Then take the path to the water’s edge, crossing over using the stepping stones. Surprisingly the Alaminos River had a gentle trickle flowing.
Stay close to the water’s edge until you find the well used path on your left. The path goes up and down due to the rocks and boulders, so you have to use your judgement getting through. Keep going until you finally arrive at the large pool of water (shallow at the moment)
The main Barranco Blanco waterfall is hidden from view just around the bend. There is a swinging chair above the pool, which usually has a lot of bathers in the summer, (I swam in this pool one summer to the otherside and the water was icy cold!).
The river section was really peaceful. There wasn’t much wildlife unfortunately. The vegetation in the area has started growing back nicely since the last storm did a lot of damage.
Making your way back to the start is a gentle uphill climb most of the way.
Towards the middle of October you can drive down to the small car park and just do the river section. I found using walking poles advantageous on this route.
