Itinerary description
Physical difficulty: 2/5
Note #1: There are 2 entrances to this trail, connected by a boring 2 km long stretch along the main road. Parking spots are available at both entrances, and also in many places in between.
Note #2: In the non-summer months, the temperature at the top will be several degrees colder than at the start, and most likely a lot windier. Prepare accordingly.
Note #3: The trail is generally very well marked, though we did get wandered off a couple of times: once from Sladovačko brdo until Intersection #5, and once from Intersection #5 to #6 where we lost sight of the markings. It should be easy to find your way back to the trail if this happens to you too.
--
This is a technically easy trail that will take you from the village of Baške Oštarije to the Sladovačko brdo peak, and from there to Veliki Sadikovac peak. The latter is an official summit of the Croatian Hiking Trail.
The trek is through forest terrain, mostly in the shade. Once you reach Sladovačko brdo, the descent is along its crest. Likewise, once you reach the peak altitude of Veliki Sadikovac, you will hike along its crest for about 800m to where the summit is officially located.
The summit offers a beautiful view of the Lika-Senj county to the east (and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the far distance). To the west, if you're lucky and the weather is clear, you will be greeted by a view of the Adriatic sea and its islands (most prominently Pag).
The way back is also through forests.
Waypoints
Parking
The parking spot at Baške Oštarije; a Velebit Nature Park info stand is also here, but it was closed during the winter season.
Start (Entrance #1)
The official start of the trail, if you want to follow it counter-clockwise.
Intersection #3
Take a left, follow trail 106 to Veliki Sadikovac/Sladovačko brdo
Sladovačko brdo (1241m)
The smaller of the two peaks on this trail; however, it's actually nicer, offers about the same stunning view, is less windy, and has more room around to kick back and enjoy.
Intersection #5
Cross the road and head again into the woods; this is the start of the ascent to Veliki Sadikovac.
Intersection #6
Go right and up; on your way back, you will backtrack here and take the other path (left-hand path in the photo) to start the return journey.
Karst pit and the Veliki Sadikovac official summit stamp
The seal is located about 50m from the peak, inside the bedrock; right next to it is a deep karst pit.
Veliki Sadikovac (1286m)
The highest peak of this trail, Veliki Sadikovac. It's located on the NW side of South Velebit.
Intersection #7 (Entrance #2)
This will be your entrance if you decide to follow the trail clockwise; free parking is available just next to this spot. From this point onwards until you close the loop (about 2 km) you'll be walking along the main asphalt road,. but there's plenty of space to walk beside it.
Fountain with obelisk, built from chiseled stone (1845)
This fountain is dedicated to the building of an old important road in the region. There's also a spacious parking spot immediately near it. The spring from the fountain is also considered to aid in fertility. Note: I'm unsure if it's actually safe to drink, so probably it's better not to do it.
