Waypoints
Estacio de frança
A railway station was first built here in the 19th century as the main terminus for trains arriving from France and for services to North East Catalonia and the Costa Brava. Rebuilt and reopened for the 1929 International Exhibition, the two monumental buildings that make up the station were designed by the architect Pedro Muguruza and inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII. The station was closed for renovation between from 1988 and 1992, reopening for the Olympic Games of 1992. It is generally seen as the city's most beautiful stations being the last of the surface mainline stations. Nowadays the Station is suffering from passenger decline due to international and long-distance trains now passing through Sants and there are plans to cease rail services to this station.
Old City Wall
This is the remains of the Roman city wall and was discovered when the Renfe workers car park was remodeled into a public square.
Barcelona & Maremagnum port
This is the original port of Barcelona significantly remodelled in the 1980s in preparation for the 1992 Olympics.
Museo de historia de catalunya
The Museum of History of Catalonia opened in 1996 with the aim to display the history of Catalunya with redevelopment work on the facade commencing 1991 prior to the Olympic games. The museum is located in the old General Warehouses of Commerce (MGC) Although the building is known as the Palau de Mar which is the only conserved building of the old industrial port of Barcelona. The MGC was designed in 1881 by the engineer Maurici Garrán, who was inspired by the English port buildings of the time. You can see the familiarity between the docks of London or Liverpool and the Palau de Mar in Barcelona. The construction works began in 1885, on the old fishermen's beach, and was opened on July 1, 1902. The press of the time applauded the modernity of the facilities that incorporated elevators and conveyor belts. In the surroundings of the building, railways were built to facilitate the movement of merchandise within the port. http://www.mhcat.cat
Sant Miquel del Port church
The church, like all of Barceloneta was built under the orders of Jaime Miguel de Guzmán Dávalos y Spínola, 2nd marques of mines and capital of Catalonia. In 1749 The marques gave the project to the engineer Juan Martín de Cermeño, a lieutenant coronel of army engineers with the intention of distributing the houses to fishermen and dock workers. Juan Martin enlisted the help of Damià Ribas, civil architect for Barcelona who tasked the Engineer Francisco Paredes. Construction began 3rd February 1753 with the laying of the first street stones. On the 8th of May construction begun on the Sant Miquel del port church. After two years of construction the church was blessed by bishop Manuel López de Aguirre on the 28th of September 1755. https://santmiqueldelport.org/
Barceloneta Market
The Building itself is an ugly modern construction. However the food markets in Barcelona have the best fresh foods - fruit, vegetables, meat, fish etc.. http://www.mercatsbcn.cat/
La Fraternitat Library
This is a public library. http://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/biblioteques/bibbarceloneta/ca
Sant Miquel beach
Plenty of restaurants, Traditional Mallorcan sand sculptures, a surf shop and beach chiringitos (bars on the Beach, open till late in the night/early morning)
More nightclubs
At the Base of hotel Arts is Barcelona Olympic port. This area of town is a bit seedy and has many nightclubs as well as a thriving pick pocket and bag thief community. Exercise extreme caution with your personal belongings if partying till late in this part of town.
