Itinerary description
Benahavís circular route with Montemayor Castle ruins
We start this walk from the Gran Hotel Benahavis along the River Guadalmina , a favored haunt for visitors to this popular village best known for its gastronomy. You get to a dam and beyond it a pantano or small lagoon. When you skirt the lagoon the road takes off to the left and you take a right onto a path which starts to climb gently. The path is wide throughout the entire trek since we will be keeping to the demarcated sendero must of the way. However, we do ignore the sendero route on a number of occasions as we climb. Take time to look back and enjoy the great views Ed the coast north towards Malaga and south to Gibraltar and beyond into north morocco.
The detour to get to montemayor is I feel well worth the effort (will take you 30 min there and back) for the magnificent 360 degree views you get and the appreciation of the labor some14th century Moors put into the construction of such as strategic stronghold. Be a little careful of the last 10 minutes climb to the castle ruins which can be a bit slippery and narrow and for those with vertigo, not all that pleasant!
The climb down into Benahavis is all along hard and tarmacked road uninteresting mostly. All in all this is a good 13km trek along very wide paths easy to follow and enjoying nice scenery on a clear day

Muy bonito hasta el castillo. Del castillo al pueblo te mete por carretera y ya no emociona tanto. Pero es lo que hay. Los primeros 9km merecen mucho la pena.
