Itinerary description

Pleasant coastal stroll around the village of Biscoitos.
Good alternative on a day when the higher parts of the island are shrouded in mist or catching some rain.
Note unusual starting point near the house we had rented. This circular walk can of course be started anywhere else.
Our walking time includes a 1h picnic break.

Piscinas Naturais de Biscoitos

A popular bathing spot for locals and tourists alike. Watch out whether there is a flag flying that alerts about jellyfish (there are yellow and red jellyfish alert flags). The various species of these creatures can be a real nuisance in the Azores, but the population varies greatly from year to year. If in doubt, ask the lifguards where they consider it safe to swim.

Biscoitos is one of the few places in the Azores where still "vinho de cheiro" is produced. https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinho_de_cheiro This very typical regional, light red wine is based on American grape varieties. The EU prohibits its commercialization outside the Autonomous Region of the Azores. So if you want to try it, it's got to be here! Check out the local supermarkets.
