Itinerary description
This is a one way hike that encompasses the most scenic part of Stradbroke island. Because it is a one-way hike you need a car at either end of the walk. The walk can be done either way but it is cooler to walk south starting at point lookout. The recorded track was done in conjunction with the flowering of wildflowers on the island in September and hence we started from the south.
The hike is best done at low tide. This allows you to walk on much harder packed sand. Across the hike there is significant amounts of sand walking so having a combination of footwear can help. The advantage of starting from the south is that you finish off with the coffee shops.
There are several tracks out to Blue Lake from the Blue Lake car park. This recording of the track takes the hill route because it gets you to lookout that looks right over this east side the island all the way down to the Gold Coast.
From the lookout the track takes the blue light track down the hill to Blue Lake. From there it follows a track that takes you to a firetrail which eventually takes you to the track that leads to the beach.
At one stage along the beach we took a detour inland along a firetrail to view the keyhole lagoon's. Stradbroke island has a whole series of freshwater lakes just inland from the main dunes that protect the foreshore. We use the opportunity to lunch and buy the lake and then proceeded further up the track to eventually join with a track that took us back to the beach.
The conclusion of the hike just involved following the beach front all the way to Point Lookout. At the time we were doing the walk along this route many whales were visible frolicking along the coastline with their whale calves.
This hike is very exposed and hence in the suburbance is probably not viable however in the cooler months the track is a must and one of the most beautiful routes that you can take on the island.
