Itinerary description
This unexpected and extraordinary nature reserve wedged between the highway and a commercial zone of Sarzana is a nice surprise. An easy walk with plenty of observation points offers easy viewing of plenty of wildlife. Especially, the enormous amount of turtles sunbathing on branches at the edges of the lake are worth the hike. Further, I saw purple herons, a black-crowned night heron, egrets, a coypu, ferruginous ducks and various other waterfowl and reed birds.
There are various access points (see the photo of the information board at the entrance I took), but they are not easy to find. I took one on the Via Silea. There are only a few parking spaces there. Information panels show the location of observation points and paths. Between the various lakes a channeled stream flows south to the Magra river. You can cross this stream on at least two points not indicated on that map (just follow this trail). On the north side is the commercial zone, on the south side the highway. Here you can also connect to the trails along the Magra river south of the highway. I liked the lakes 1 and 3 (marked with waypoints) most as I saw most wildlife there, but that could be a coincidence. There are no facilities apart from the shelters and a pick-nick place near observation point 3.
