Itinerary description
Cabbage Tree Creek provides a excellent combination of waterfalls and beautiful creek scenery when undertaken during Brisbane's wet season. This expedition up the creek is not to be undertaken by those who are new to hiking or not very experienced. It includes some very difficult sections that require rock climbing skills and or navigation skills to get round the steep waterfalls.
The hike starts from Fernlands Rd at the end and precedes down and up from Cabbage Tree Creek initially to get to Light Line Rd. After proceeding along Light Line road for a while you will come to a very undefined track heading off from the left. This is after the connection of Job Six road.
Following this undefined old firetrail you will eventually hit a churt ridge. You will need to navigate over the scree slope and around rock faces down to a ridge that will take you down to Cabbage Tree Creek.
From now on you just proceed up Creek. The lower section of Cabbage Tree Creek is not very exciting but still very pretty. This is not under stating it's beauty but in comparison to the upper section it is very much an entree. Decisions will have to be made in the lower sections as to take the left-hand side or the right hand side of the creek to avoid obstacles.
Eventually you will hit Township Break and this is an exit point that allows those that are somewhat tied and bruised from the early section to take a very steep climb back up to Light Line road. I noticed the Township Break fire trail does not show on the Wikiloc map so if you are looking for where that exit is it is just below the junction of the creeks at the 333 elevation point.
If you are going to proceed past this point understand that there will be steep and very narrow pathways along cliff faces and difficult scrambles. To stay in the creek you will require rope and very experienced climbers.
There are a number of large waterfalls along the path along Cabbage Tree Creek from this point. Most of the waterfalls will require a exit up steep embankments along the right-hand side and then navigating over and under cliffs through vegetation that is covered in lawyer Vine. It is very difficult to describe the exact route and hence having an experienced navigator will assist.
The final waterfall requires navigation up the hill to the left and along and narrow track to get round it. To top things off this hike finishes going steep uphill back to Fernlands road. Leave it in no doubt that I was totally spent by the end of this hike.
The beauty of the waterfalls and the vegetation cannot be captured in photos and hence only doing this whole hike can you appreciate this area. Leave it in no doubt you will spend a full day on this hike. Do not look at the assigned wikiloc time.
