Itinerary description
Easy walk on beautiful Caldey Island. The walk starts from the jetty where the boat from Tenby drops you off (see http://www.caldey-island.co.uk/boats.htm). It first takes you along a minor road to the monastery/small village. Here you can find shops, a bar-restaurant, a post office and a large green surrounded by trees. From here you go up towards the priory and almost directly turn right on a narrow path to the Old Priory which takes you through woods and past an old well up to the Old Priory with a small church next to it. There is a chocolate and fudge factory here as well, where you can stock up on some sweets before embarking on a large loop towards the west of the island. This grassy loop takes you through fields, towards a viewpoint of Sandtop Bay (access not permitted) before turning back along the south cliffs towards the lighthouse. On the south side you have magnificent views across Bristol Channel towards Lundy Island and Devon, and steep cliffs. From the lighthouse you go back towards the priory via a small detour, and there descend along the broader path towards the village. Here you make another loop along St David’s church, through the woods and via a viewpoint at Paul Jones Bay. Back at the village, you go back north towards the shore. Here is a magnificent sandy beach where you can spend some time before going back to the jetty for your return trip to Tenby.
You will find something to eat and drink in the village, and at the chocolate and fudge factory. No facilities at other places on the island. Adult return fare for the boat is 12 £.
