Itinerary description
Camino Santiago de Sagunto stage (etapa) 2. For now, as time permits, I am enjoying this and other local (Valencia area) Camino stages as day walks rather than as a multi-day through walks done on consecutive days.
I took the 7:40 am (festivo schedule) C-5 train from Valencia Nord to Algimia-Ciudad station; arrived at 8:45 am. From there, it was a short walk to the other side of the train tracks to enter the well-maintained Via Verde Ojos Negros path that is popular with mountain bike enthusiasts. A lovely 10 kms on the Via Verde with many vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges, orange groves, and other fields. Look for the yellow Camino sign at around 10.3/10.4 km leading you to the left, away from the Via Verde and under the A-23 motorway and into the town of Soneja. From here onward, to the rest of this stage (Segorbe), you will no longer be on the Via Verde. After leaving Soneja, a lovely stretch along the Palancia riverbed, s very small pueblo of Torques, andseveral kilometers later, and then a few kilometers to the town of Geldo where you’ll see nice mural art work on the side of buildings. From Geldo, a mostly flat countryside walk with the views of Segorbe on a hill on the distance. Today I stop at the roundabout just after the train (Sagunto-Teruel line) underpass near the Segorbe train station where my wife and friends await me in a car to whisk me away for a tasty mid-day meal at Restaurante Los Cincuenta Caños on the north outskirts of Segorbe overlooking Rio Palancia.
