Itinerary description
XIV.

Camino de Santiago Primitivo: 5ª stage: Borres-Berducedo (w/ English version)
They say that this is the hardest stage of the entire Primitivo, both because of the accumulated slope, almost 1000 m D+, and because it is a mid-mountain stage on technical terrain with very little shade, without intermediate population and barely without water supply. To this, it had to be added that we were caught in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures above 32º, unusual in these parts. In contrast, they also say that it is one of the most beautiful stages, and they are right. It also has the incentive to travel through mountain ranges that still house brown bear populations today. It's not that we want to meet any, but knowing that one is sharing habitat with such an emblematic species, in danger of extinction, rejoices us. This feeling is not shared by the countrymen of the place who see with concern the increase in population and the dangers that this represents for livestock and for the people themselves.
A kilometer and a half from Borres, a sign shows us the two alternatives for today's route: on the left, through the town of Pola de Allande, longer but with less unevenness; on the right, the route of hospitals, shorter but harder. We take the second option, more in line with the Jacobean route because it owes its name to the existence in the past of three pilgrim hospitals (used the term "hospital" in its etymological sense, as a place of accommodation).
From this point, the route will be a succession of slopes to travel the entire hill of the Sierra de Rañadoiro to the port of Marta and, then, from the Sierra del Palo, to the homonymous port. This last mountain range offers the attraction of crossing areas used by the Romans for the extraction of gold and there are still traces of it.
From the port of Palo begins a vertiginous descent along trails with a lot of loose stone to the town of Lago. In this section, the hardness of the route and the suffocating heat was causing a dent in more than one pilgrim, especially in those little foresighted with the water.
From Lago, the path is leveled, crossing a striking red pine forest.
We will spend the night in Berducedo, a small town with few services and little accommodation capacity, which is not enough in the summer months.
