Itinerary description

We take advantage of the fact that today's stage is shorter and that yesterday we arrived late, to take a walk through Aldeanueva before leaving, since it is a quite beautiful town, above all, for its popular mountain architecture, its two churches and that medieval bridge that crosses the stream known as the Gorge. By the way, in the Plaza del Mercado there is a churrería that opens early for breakfast.
The stage has two clearly differentiated parts. The first is the route of the entire Ambroz valley to the port of Béjar. The second, from the port of Béjar to the destination: the Calzada de Béjar. The first part of the stage, up to Baños de Montemayor, has the incentive to permanently contemplate the Sierra de Béjar, which was snowy at this time. It is a mountain range that we were fortunate to travel a few years ago, when we climbed to its two main summits, the Calvitero, the highest height of Extremadura, and the Canchal de la Ceja, summit of the province of Salamanca. The negative is that the road goes, for the most part, on the shoulder of the road, and it is a road where vehicles tend to go at a great speed. At the exit of Aldeanueva, there is the detour to Hervás, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
Baños de Montemayor is known for its hot spring spa, of Roman origin. The Camino crosses its old town that is pleasant to visit. At the exit of Baños, you take a cobbled road that offers fabulous views of the entire Ambroz valley, which we have traveled, with extensive chestnut trees covering its slopes.
The port of Béjar, about 900 m.a.s.l., is a key point not only of the stage but also of the entire Vía de la Plata, since it marks the boundary between the provinces of Cáceres and Salamanca. Therefore, when we crossed it, we left Extremadura to enter Castilla y León. The change of landscape is radical because we immerse ourselves in a thick oak forest. We are crossing the Central system and one has the feeling of being transiting from the south to the north of Spain.
We descend until we cross the Gothic bridge of the Magdalena over the Cuerpo de Hombre river. We follow the course of the river for a stretch and then face the climb to the Calzada de Béjar.
The Calzada de Béjar is a town interto the Via de la Plata since its origins, as its name shows. However, it is a very small town. It doesn't have a grocery store or restaurants, just a small bar that, in low season, doesn't usually open in the afternoon/night.
As a place of accommodation, we stayed at the Jorge rural house (https://maps.app.goo.gl/dzZTxhgg4EfpmWoW9? G_st=ic).
