Camino de Santiago: Vía de la Plata: etapa 7ª: Zafra-Villafranca de los Barros (with English version)

Empezamos la etapa en la Plaza Grande de Zafra. Las flechitas te conducen a la iglesia de la Candelaria para girar a la derecha y, pasando frente al ayuntamiento, salir del casco antiguo. Se enfila la calle Ancha, que pasa por el pilar de san Benito, construido en el s. XV con estilo gótico y se sale de la población por la imponente torre de San Francisco, también del s. XV.
Nuestro destino más inmediato es la población de los Santos de Maimona, situada a escasos 4 kilómetros. Para ello, debemos de subir hasta el alto de la sierra de los Olivos y dejarnos caer por su otra ladera. El Camino te lleva hasta la agradable plaza de España rodeada de sus edificios más emblemáticos: la iglesia parroquial de nuestra señora de los Ángeles, del s. XVI, en la que destaca la puerta del Perdón, con su elaborado estilo plateresco, y la casa de la encomienda de la Orden de Santiago, bajo cuya jurisdicción estuvo la población, que aloja en la actualidad al ayuntamiento.
El itinerario entre los Santos de Maimona y Villafranca de los Barros discurre entre olivares, viñedos y otros árboles frutales. Poco a poco, nos vamos acercando a la autovía Ruta de la Plata hasta cruzarla por debajo, pues nuestro destino se sitúa al otro lado.
La etapa termina en la iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora del Valle (siglo XVI), que tiene una espectacular portada gótica. Junto a la misma, se ubica el museo etnográfico, que no pudimos visitar al encontrarse cerrado. Otro monumento importante de la población es la ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Coronada, del siglo XV, por la que pasaremos mañana a nuestra salida de la población.
Villafranca de los Barros pertenece a la comarca “Tierra de Barros”, llamada así por lo arcilloso de sus tierras. Con capital en Almendralejo, que visitaremos mañana, es una de las más prósperas de Extremadura dada la fertilidad de sus suelos, idóneos para el cultivo del olivar y de la vid.

Camino de Santiago: Vía de la Plata: stage 7ª: Zafra-Villafranca de los Barros (with English version)

We started the stage in the Plaza Grande de Zafra. The arrows lead you to the church of La Candelaria to turn right and, passing in front of the town hall, leave the old town. Ancha Street is lined up, which passes through the pillar of San Benito, built in the s. XV with Gothic style and you leave the town by the imposing tower of San Francisco, also from the s. XV.

Our most immediate destination is the town of the Saints of Maimona, located just 4 kilometers away. To do this, we must go up to the top of the Sierra de los Olivos and let ourselves fall down its other slope. The Camino takes you to the pleasant Plaza de España surrounded by its most emblematic buildings: the parish church of Our Lady of the Angels, of the s. XVI, in which the door of Forgiveness stands out, with its elaborate Plateresque style, and the house of the encomienda of the Order of Santiago, under whose jurisdiction the population was, which currently houses the city council.

The itinerary between the Saints of Maimona and Villafranca de los Barros runs between olive groves, vineyards and other fruit trees. Little by little, we are approaching the Ruta de la Plata highway until we cross it below, because our destination is on the other side.

The stage ends in the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Valle (16th century), which has a spectacular Gothic facade. Next to it, there is the ethnographic museum, which we could not visit because it was closed. We extend the track to the Diana hotel (https://maps.app.goo.gl/aoyJD4U2R1bENV8L8? Another important monument of the town is the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Coronada, from the 15th century, through which we will pass tomorrow at our exit from the town.

Villafranca de los Barros belongs to the "Tierra de Barros" region, so called because of the clay of its lands. With capital in Almendralejo, which we will visit tomorrow, it is one of the most prosperous in Extremadura given the fertility of its soils, suitable for the cultivation of olive groves and vines.
