Camino Sur de Santiago. Sexta etapa: Fuentes de León-Valencia del Ventoso (with English version)

Partiendo del lugar de alojamiento, empezamos la jornada visitando la iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Llama la atención la abundancia de cruces de Santiago que tiene en su exterior, dos en el suelo, hechas de piedrecitas frente a dos de sus portadas y una rematando el arco conopial de su puerta principal. Y es que no podemos olvidar que estamos en territorios que pertenecieron a la Orden de Santiago.
La cruz de Santiago es una de las cruces más cargadas de simbología. Fue diseñada por la propia Orden militar de caballería, fundada en el s. XII para proteger a los peregrinos, es por ello que tiene forma de espada, lo cual nos evoca la figura del Santiago "Matamoros" de la batalla de Clavijo y, al mismo tiempo, es un recordatorio de la manera en la que fue matado el apóstol, pues le cortaron la cabeza con una espada. La "empuñadura" está rematada por un corazón, y sus brazos, por sendas flores de lis que, al parecer, representan el honor sin mancha del apóstol.
Volvemos a la plaza de España y retomamos aquí el Camino jacobeo, que atraviesa toda la población de sur a norte hasta salir por la ermita de San Onofre, del s. XV. En la avenida de Portugal, el bar “El Cuervo” es una buena opción de desayuno pues abre a las 7.
Salimos del pueblo por la carretera que se dirige a Segura de León. Hoy transitaremos por pueblos que pertenecieron al priorato de San Marcos de León, que, a su vez, estaban bajo el auspicio de la orden de Santiago. Atravesaremos la comarca de Tentudia, cuyo monasterio se encuentra no muy lejos de aquí y que tenemos pensado visitar en un par de días, una vez terminado este Camino Sur. La dehesa extremeña, con sus grandes encinares, los cerdos en montanera, las jaras en flor y los bolos graníticos serán los protagonistas de la etapa. En definitiva, todo un placer para los sentidos.
Tras un corto trayecto por la carretera, el Camino nos plantea una disyuntiva: seguir por asfalto hasta Segura de León o tomar un camino a la derecha. No lo dudamos: el camino nos ofrecerá un recorrido mucho más placentero y prácticamente de similar distancia.
Llegamos a Segura de León y nos tomamos un tiempo visitando sus monumentos más emblemáticos: el imponente castillo, construido en el siglo XIV por la orden de Santiago y la
parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, del s XIII. El castillo es visitable, pero únicamente sábados y domingos. La iglesia tiene aspecto de fortaleza y cuenta con un arco en su fachada principal rematado con una cruz de Santiago. A la salida de la población, la ermita de los Remedios, del s. XVI, junto al cementerio, alberga un impresionante retablo barroco. Antes de dejar Segura, no te olvides de mirar hacia atrás para ver la estampa de la población recostada en el cerro.
Tomamos el camino de la cañada real de Valencia del Ventoso, que atraviesa la dehesa. Viene a salir, finalmente, a la carretera BA-160, que seguiremos durante unos 3 kilómetros. Es entonces cuando parte un carril a la izquierda que busca el río Ardila para cruzarlo y volver nuevamente a la carretera. Si el río va crecido, su vadeo se complica mucho, con lo que lo prudente es seguir la carretera. No era el caso y pudimos atravesarlo por unas piedras. Sin embargo, al pasar al otro lado, encontramos que nos habíamos metido sin quererlo en un terreno cercado y tuvimos que saltar una valla. Para evitar esto, lo aconsejable es seguir el curso del río unos 100 m más en sentido descendente y vadearlo al conectar con un carril. Es interesante saber que el río Ardila pertenece a la cuenca del Guadiana.
Una vez nuevamente en la carretera, esta pasa por las inmediaciones de la pintoresca ermita de Nuestra Señora del Valle antes de llegar a Valencia del Ventoso. No te puedes ir de esta localidad sin visitar su castillo, del s. XV, también construido, como otros de la zona, por la orden de Santiago, aunque solo podrás verlo por fuera. Frente a su puerta, hallarás el albergue de peregrinos, aunque nosotros no nos alojamos allí sino en Hotel Fuente Nueva (https://goo.gl/maps/a6aAMdosxXxMpgh19, teléfono: 645902487, C. Calzada, 17, 06330). Otro monumento de valía es la parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, del s. XV. Hoy es jueves santo y cuando la visité por la tarde, estaban procesión dos tronos con gran fervor popular. Tuve la oportunidad de entrar en el templo y contemplar sus bonitos retablos barrocos.

Starting from the place of accommodation, we start the day by visiting the parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. The abundance of crosses of Santiago that it has on the outside, two on the ground, made of pebbles in front of two of its portals and one finishing off the conopial arch of its main door is striking. And we can't forget that we are in territories that belonged to the order of Santiago.

We return to the Plaza de España and return here to the Jacobean Camino, which crosses the entire population from south to north until we leave through the hermitage of San Onofre, from the s. XV. On Avenida de Portugal, the bar "El Cuervo" is a good breakfast option because it opens at 7.

We leave the town on the road that goes to Segura de León. Today we will travel through towns that belonged to the priory of San Marcos de León, which, in turn, were under the auspices of the order of Santiago. We will cross the region of Tentudia, whose monastery is not far from here and which we plan to visit in a couple of days, once this South Road is finished. The Extremadura pasture, with its large holm oak holm oaks, the mountain pigs, the jigs in bloom and the granite bowls will be the protagonists of the stage. In short, a pleasure for the senses.

After a short journey along the road, the Camino presents us with a dilemma: continue on asphalt to Segura de León or take a road to the right. We do not doubt it: the road will offer us a much more pleasant route and practically of similar distance.

We arrived at Segura de León and took some time visiting its most emblematic monuments: the imposing castle, built in the 14th century by the order of Santiago and the

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción parish, from the 13th century. The castle is visitable, but only on Saturdays and Sundays. The church looks like a fortress and has an arch on its main facade topped with a cross of Santiago. At the exit of the town, the hermitage of the Remedios, of the s. XVI, next to the cemetery, houses an impressive Baroque altarpiece. Before leaving Segura, don't forget to look back to see the picture of the population lying on the hill.

We take the road to the royal glen of Valencia del Ventoso, which crosses the pasture. Finally, it comes to the BA-160 road, which we will continue for about 3 kilometers. That's when a lane on the left starts looking for the Ardila River to cross it and return to the road again. If the river is grown, its vade is very complicated, so it is prudent to follow the road. It wasn't the case and we were able to cross it for some stones. However, when we passed to the other side, we found that we had inadvertently gotten into a fenced terrain and we had to jump a fence. To avoid this, it is advisable to follow the course of the river about 100 m more in a downward direction and go through it when connecting with a lane. It is interesting to know that the Ardila River belongs to the Guadiana basin.

Once again on the road, it passes through the vicinity of the picturesque hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Valle before reaching Valencia del Ventoso. You can't leave this town without visiting its castle, from the s. XV, also built, like others in the area, by the order of Santiago, although you can only see it on the outside. In front of your door, you will find the pilgrims' hostel, although we do not stay there but at Hotel Fuente Nueva (https://goo.gl/maps/a6aAMdosxXxMpgh19, phone: 645902487, C. Calzada, 17, 06330). Another monument of value is the parish of Our Lady of Hope, from the s. XV. Today is Holy Thursday and when I visited it in the afternoon, there were procession of two thrones with great popular fervor. I had the opportunity to enter the temple and contemplate its beautiful baroque altarpieces.
