Itinerary description
Campamento Susúa
We attempted to record two trails in one "susua/yauco and susua old service road" but ran out of battery. Will try a redo in the near future.
These trail was done over a 2 day period (friday 4pm ending on sunday at 5pm). Only serious hikers or outdoorsmen with good equipment should attempt these hike.
You will need: backpack, good boots, machete or big knife, a good cantimplora and lifestraw, long sleeve shirt and pants, hat, first aid kit a map, compass, and a cellphone among other things like flashlights, hammocks, paracord, rainfly ect.
After hurricane maria devastation, these trail got completely messed up. It actually does not show where it ends, cause we ran out of battery in our battery packs and cellphones (I forgot to turn them off at night "that's why we usually carry a solar panel wich we left"). There where many fallen trees and lots of branches everywhere. The good thing is that nature is reviving in such a nice way it's amazing.
Fore sure will redo these trail in the near future, so the entire 18 km can be documented.
You have to cross the river a couple of times. We took advantage of those crossing to refill our drinking containers and prepare coffee. There is wood all over so you don't have to worry for firewood. Take in consideration these is a protected forest and you have to practice live no trail, which means you have to bury any aches left and only make necessary use of it "boiling water for drinking".
The PR government doesn't understand how important it is to maintain these types of trails. It's a shame. There is so much beauty out there and no desire to share it.
Bosque susua only has two workers and almost no equipment to keep up with the good maintenance these trails really need.
