Itinerary description
Great route straight from the campsite. leaving the campsite, cross over the road and follow the smaller road up past houses, horses, olive trees, walnut trees and wild artichoke leading into the hills.
The first part is all road and uphill (although not that steep and very little traffic) until you get to the Fuente de los 16 Caños. Great to stop and fill up with cool water before heading further up but leaving the road. When we did it (September 21) there was some building work going on so it was very dusty.
We stopped near the top for a bocadillo in the shade of an olive tree. There’s not much shade around but the views are great - you look back and see the Canales behind you and Guejar Sierra below you. Very few people on the route, we passed 2 or 3 the whole time.
The best part, especially if you go with kids, came after this. First of all, 2 goats popped their heads up behind a rock then scampered up the hill behind us, with speed and dexterity we were very jealous of. Then we spotted a bigger goat standing on the cliff above us watching our slow progress along the track. And then, we rounded a corner to see a group of about 16, including mums and babies, run across the path right in front of us and continued to watch them skip up the mountains. This turned our walk from “it’s hot, my legs hurt” into “wow, this is the coolest walk ever!”
Once we’d past the goats, our smaller path joined up with a wider track. Turn right to go down to the pueblo but it’s worth heading up for 5 minutes to get to the Mirador where you get views of the “Faldas de Sierra Nevada, Cerro El Calar and the village of Sierra Guejar”.
From here we headed down to the village, stopped for a Clara and orange juice in the main square, had a wander around before heading up and out of the village past horses and farms.
This road brings you out just below the campsite. Walking up the road on the right hand side, look out for a pond like area with a big frog in it. Then back to stroke the cats at the campsite and jump in the pool.
A kiddie- friendly walk with great views.
