Itinerary description

This is my favourite long circular walk. And walking alongside running water for a while is a real treat in this area. Walking poles are advised to help with crossing the shallow river on several occasions. There are some very steep inclines, which together with the distance, is why I have classed it as difficult.

5-6 hours walking time, 18 km - slow going but the terrain dictates the speed - well it does for me!

The first section from Santa Ana in Canillas de Albaida to La Fabrica de la Luz is on a road, the first section very quiet, and the second section is used by lorries visiting the stone quarry, but there are only three regular lorries so not too much traffic.

Cross the river at La Fabrica and walk along the opposite bank with the water on your right, steadily gaining altitude until reaching the highest point at Puerto Blanquillo (8 km).

Then you will largely be walking gently downhill, although a steep descent at first and several stages of incline

Enjoy a picnic stop at Venta Los Pradillos where you can gaze in awe at the surrounding views to the peaks of the mountain ranges and down to the Mediterranean in the distance.

It is possible to peel off towards Cómpeta if that is your destination (indicated on the wikiloc instructions). Otherwise return to Santa Ana and enjoy a refreshing drink and a late lunch in the village.
