Itinerary description

We combined this walk provided by the Ayuntamiento de Casares with a walk through the breathtaking village of Casares.

Situated at only 13 kilometres from the coast it seems as if life has stood still here for centuries. One feels very small and insignificant walking along the old 13th century battlements of the Arab castle, realizing that you may walk in one of the few cities in this area that has never been conquered.

We parked our car at a place on the MA-8300 where people can dump their waste, next to which you will see the information panel of the Ayuntamento de Casares for this walk.

We followed the GR 249 track ( Gran Senda de Malaga), signposted white-red, all the way to Casares. This part of the walk is beautiful; you will have great views of the coast and the Mediterranean from Marbella to the Rock of Gibraltar and the Moroccan mountains. Once the track really strarts to descend it gets narrower and you will get the first views of Casares, perched on the rocks, but still quite far way.

At the lowest point of the walk, at 150 metres, you will see a small waterfall and you will have to cross a stream, the Arroyo Tinterero.

What follows is a beautiful walk up to Casares along a wide track with some great views of the village.

Having arrived at Casares we took our time to wander through the village enjoying the hub and bustle of the Plaza de España but also the quiet narrow streets and alleyways and corners a little further on.

Especially impressive as far as panorama is concernd are the old battlements and this is certainly a part of the village you should not miss.

After visiting the battlements we found our way back to the Ruta Circular 2 and followed the Ma-8300 again towards another information panel of this route from where a beautful track leaves the road and takes you with a few ups and downs back to the parking place.

This is a very lovely walk indeed which could easily take up a whole day if you want to.

Thank you Ayuntamiento de Casares!

Starting at km9.5 on the MA8300 mountain road to Cáceres. This moderate trek can be done in reverse and is also great. Combining two marked sendero walks it is well marked throughout and
is constantly climbing and descending which adds to the workout! At a steady 4-5kpm expect to finish in under 3 hours if you don’t stop for too long in Cáceres or for breaks. A great walk, varied terrain and only a little tarmac and a fair amount of concreted ground but excellent views and flora and woods. Probably not a great walk to do from June to August but fine anytime else. Grab a coffee or bocadillo or lunch in Casares or any of the exquisite gastronomically superb restaurants along the road to the town. Thanks for sharing !
