Itinerary description
Walk on the ridge that defines the Casentino Valley. It took about 4 days with my winter camping equipment. The trail is almost always easy to follow and there are no dangerous or technical hiking passages. I did this in winter. In summer it does not require any particular skill.
The number of the trail is always 00.
I left La Verna at about 12:30. Walked toward "Poggio tre vescovi" (which is on the Appendino ridge) and then "Passo dei Mandrioli". Slept about 1h from reaching Passo dei Mandrioli. The second day, always keeping the Appennino ridge, walked toward Poggio Spillo, then "Passo dei Fangacci". There I took the unpaved road instead of walking into the woods since I already know that place quite well. Reached "Eremo di Camaldoli" and slept in one of the rooms the monks offer to peregrines. The morning after walking directly to "Prato Bertone" (the trail starts behind the monastery). From there, I walked all the ridge until 1h from "passo di croce ai mori" following the indication for "Passo della Calla", "monte Falco", "monte Falterona", "La macia" and then "passo di croce ai mori". Slept a bit off of the trail and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. On the 3rd day, I walked from there to Monte Secchieta. Here you are not walking on the Appennino Ridge. This is the ridge that divides the Casentino valley from the others (commonly called the "wrong valleys" :) ). The way to reach Monte Secchieta is almost always an unpaved road that goes from "Passo di croce ai mori" to "Passo della consuma" and then to Secchieta. At "Passo della consuma" there is a small village where you can buy groceries. The last day, from Secchieta to "Croce del Pratomagno" is quite easy even if physically demanding with more than 1300m of cumulative uphill...
Hope you will enjoy the trail too.
