From His face flows
The nectar stream;
From His Whispered Lineage
Comes to birth the Innate-Born.

To you is paid sincerest homage
Fath~r Repa.
On the border between Nepal and Tibet, at the left shoulder of the
misty snow mountain, Queen of the Azure Heights, under floating gold-
en clouds lay the blessed place, the Valley of Medicine. Close t-o the
bank of the celebrated Lodahan [Lohida?] River, it was encircled by a
crystal range of snow hills. There dwelt the renowned great Repa Yogi
Mila, who kept his unbounded mind absorbed in the teaching of the
Supreme Vehicle, and perfectly consolidated in the limitless Bodhi-
Mind. When the "Up-going Bliss" 1 reached the Throat-center of En-
joyment, the Song of Vajra flowed spontaneously from him. Blessed
by an uninterrupted wave of grace, he had transformed his base
consciousness into Wisdom, and, through Tantric Madness2 had con-
quered all the demons and evil spirits. He was a yogi of great power
The Conversion of the Goddess Tserinma 313
Tranquilly absorbing his mind in the original state of Dharma-Essence,
he occasionally demonstrated, with great compassion, the Samadhi re-
sulting from the conquering of the Elements,3 now concealing and now
manifesting his powers to subdue evil spirits_ While residing there, for
the benefit of faithful human beings as well as devoted spirits and De-
vas, he also performed numerous and wondrous miracles_
On the eleventh night of the summer month in the year of the Water
Snake, five bewitchingly lovable maidens came to [visit] him. They
greeted him and circumambulated him many times. Then they said,
"We have brought you some yogurt made from wild ox [Ba Men]'
milk." Saying this, they offered Milarepa a [big] blue-gem spoon filled
with yogurt. Then they sat one by one on his left and said, "We five
girls beg you to take us to your heart and permit us to make our Vow-
for-Bodhi before you." The Jetsun thought, "I have never seen such a
precious and unique spoon, nor is there in the world any food com-
parable to this wonderful yogurt! [As to these girls], their manner of
prostration, their reverse way of circumambulation, and their other un-
usual behavior prove that they are heavenly beings." But in order to
find out whether they would speak the truth, the Jetsun pretended to
be ignorant. He looked at them and asked, "Who are you? Where did
you come from?" And then he sang tunefully:
For the sake of several well-destined disciples,
The Holy Dorje-Chang, the essence of Four Bodies,
At a time of dispute and corruption,
Incarnated as Marpa, the Translator,
In the mountainous Country of Snow, Bar Dha Na,5
In the northern part of Tsamlin.
With the voice of a roaring lion,
He, the Supreme Being, rode the Supreme Vehicle.
By merely hearing His Voice one will
Be saved from falling into the Lower Paths.
I pray to you great Marpa, for those who seek me-
Pray grant them your blessing and accomplishment.
Oh Father, with the power of your compassion,
I pray that their minds with ease may be converted,
That within them the buds of Enlightenment may sprout.
In the Pure Land of the Void
Abide the Buddhas and their Sons.
With your sunlit compassion
