Itinerary description
Beautiful circular route through the chestnut grove of El Tiemblo, including a climb to the "Pico de Casillas" and a visit to the nicely renovated "Pozo de la Nieve"; a 6,4 m deep well where in the old days - when there were no refrigerators - snow was stored during wintertimes in order to have ice during the hot Spanish summers.
15-20 Minutes after the start of this route you will pass the refuge "Majalavilla", beautifully painted inside, and the more than 500 years old chestnut tree "El Abuelo" ("The Grandfather") with its completely hollow trunk, but still alive!
There are no real trails to the top of Pico de Casillas, you will have to find your way up. Some routes on the Internet show an ascent via the south-east face - the most direct one when coming from the crest "La Cuesta del Enebro". We went up starting at waypoint "A" (see picture at this waypoint) where a trail is supposed to be, but some milestones (hitos) are the only indication you will find. This route is normally taken for the descent, but we went down via the west face, along the fence untill reaching a clear trail which brings you - smoothly descending - back to waypoint "A".
If you decide to not climb the Pico de Casillas the difficulty level of the route is "easy" and quite suitable for little children.
- Route milestones: Aparcamiento El Regajo (1.085 m) - PRC AV 54 por el Refugio Majalavilla y el castaño El Abuelo (1.150 m) - Cuesta del Enebro - Pico de Casillas (1.773 m) - Pozo de la Nieve (1.472 m) - Fuente 'Corral del Riscazo' - PR AV 21 - Puente sobre el arroyo de la Yedra - PRC AV 54 - Aparcamiento El Regajo
- Moving time: 3hr 40min
- Moving average: 3,8 km/hr

It's a very beautiful place.
