Itinerary description
What a great way to appreciate Castellar Viejo and its surroundings.
First the drive to the trailhead is lovely, through gorgeous oak woods, then it's a relatively easy hike through varied terrain. Though there are a couple of uphills, they're not hard though I wouldn't want to do the climb to the fortress when it's wet.
First part of this route goes along a partially overgrown fire break along a sendero... It's much more pleasant than it sounds as the clearing gives a bit of visability but is overgrown enough so it's pleasant to walk though.
Then via an old ruin with views of Gibraltar on one side and Jimena on the other, round the mountain to a surprisingly pretty flooded valley reservoir, I guess which feeds Algeciras.
Third section is a cross country climb up toward Castellar, via the old fuente (nobody's drinking from that now.. bone dry), then up the ancient medieval road to town.
Walk around the historical hilltop fortress, then down the old stone pathway back to the start.
I wasn't expecting too much from the walk but was pleasantly surprised! As a bonus, lots of deer, birds etc, plus of course Arconocale oaks!
