Itinerary description
This is a wonderful walk.
From the parking place a narrow track takes you to the road which, after crossing it, becomes a a beautifully paved track which leads you gently and slowly with great views almost all the time up to a Mirador, La Calzada.
From there the Castillo is very close although you still cannot see it, but once you get on the road again it is present in all its splendour.
Before visiting the Castillo we walked on across the road until we saw the sign for the Fuente and after reaching that and enjoying the view on Embalse del Guadarranque we went back to the road and continued to follow it until the green white signpost indicates a path to the left.
Walking on the road is like walking along a balcony here; you will have splendid views of the plain like countryside beneath you and farther away to the north east the towns of Casares and Gaucin are clearly visisble as well as the Sierra de Bermeja, while to the south east you will have splendid views on Castellar de La Frontera and Gibraltar.
Following the white-green signposts you will make two circles through a beautiful meadow like landscape full of corkoaks (Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, which means 'çorkoaks') and will be able to look for and admire many antropomorphic rock formations.
Eventually coming back on the same road we walked back to Castillo Castellar enjoying once again the beautiful views into the opposite direction.
We took our time to walk through the small alleys of the Castillo and after that made another circle in front of it to enjoy a different viewing perspective of the castle, the countryside and the reservoir.
Finally we took the same path back to the parking place with never a dull moment for the eyes.
We highly recommend this walk to everybody who likes walking and although you walk 500 altitude meters you hardly realize this while doing so.

We did this walk today and it was lovely. We got there early, at around 09:00am and saw vultures, hawks, eagles, and even some wild deer on the way up. It was such a treat. Highly recommend this loop if youre visiting Castellar. Lovely scenery throughout!
Wow, wish I had been there today! Thanks for sharing this with me.
