Cerro Barretos – Cerro Sepultura – Pico Mijas – Puerto de los Lobos
This is a great challenging hike starting from Puerto de los Pescadores.
Follow the gravel road until you get to the ‘hidden trail’, where you turn left. Follow this trial all the way up to the top onto the Camino del Tejar, then turn right going away from ‘La Bola’. Eventually you will come to the Cerro Barretos trail on your left, passing the chain when you get to the summit of Cerro Barretos (1144m) there are a couple of aerials here and lovely views all around.
From here take the ridge route. It is faint in places, but there are cairns guiding you and you have to navigate some boulders. The next summit you pass is Cerro de la Sepultura before finally arriving at Pico Mijas (1151m).
After a lovely break with breath taking views make your way down to pick up the Carril Puerto de los Lobos for 2.3km.
When I arrive at Puerto Lobos I decided to take a shortcut going left down the firebreak. (If you stay to the left of the firebreak a lot of the trees will provide some shade).
Eventually you will come down near the end of the Pista Sur and then turn right to pick up the path parallel with the A387 road, which takes you back to the start.
This is a medium to hard walk. The only problem I encountered was coming down the firebreak which had been recently strimmed and the dry grass underfoot was a bit slippery under foot. My two walking poles were a life saver.
This walk had some of the best panoramic views I have ever seen in Málaga. You can practically see every mountain range.
To make the last section of the walk safer you can take the Camino del Tejar road back instead of the firebreak.
The icing on the cake for me today apart from the views, were on the south side, near La Bola I saw a fox for the first time ever (since I have been walking), and on the south side on the Lobos Carril a mountain goat with her two kids crossing my path. It was so beautiful to see (there were lots of goat droppings on this Carril, so this would be a good place to catch sight of some mountain goats).
If you haven’t a head for heights, this walk might not be suitable for you.
To sum up, a really excellent and challenging hike. Bring walking poles and plenty of water.
