Itinerary description
This is an awesome walk that starts and finishes at the Los Escullos Campsite.
The walk follows the track to El Pozo de los Frailes, then the track to La Boca de los Frailes and crosses the main road to follow stony tracks into the mountains above Playa de los Genoveses. Eventually the walk follows a rambla further into the hills before climbing a steep disused miners' track to a brick built obelisk. Then the walk follows sheeps' paths and scrambles over rough terrain to a high view point overlooking San Jose and the surrounding mountains.
Next follows a steep descent into a valley, scrambling over rocks and scree. There is a decent track along the valley bottom past old mining installations.
After a left turn, the track rises gently and then ends at the climax of this walk, a spectacular viewpoint with fantastic views across La Playa de los Genoveses and the surrounding cultivated fields and mountains.
From here, the route descends steeply by a stony path, at first traversing the side of the mountain. Care is needed where in places the path has been washed away. All the way down, there are the wonderful views across La Playa de los Genoveses. Towards the bottom where the ground is less steep, there is no path, just stony ground.
At the bottom, the route follows a gully which has been eroded across a cultivated field and then follows tracks to the seaside town of San Jose. Finally, it follows the stony coastal track back to the Los Escullos Campsite.
The mountains between La Boca de los Frailes and Los Genoveses are wild and remote. It would be easy to get lost here without proper navigation aids and walkers need to be well equipped for a day in these beautiful hills.
