Itinerary description
The difficult route up Chachani, reachable from the centre of Arequipa by taking a combi to Cayma/1ro de Junio, then a taxi from there for about S/.15 towards the "Academia de Policia" or "trocha". About 1.5km along the trocha (unsurfaced road) is a sign for "Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca" - the trail starts here & leads up to a couple of old abandoned huts, before continuing up the hill. From the top of the hill there is no real trail, you just have to walk across scrubland & then loose sand & stones. The last 1,000m of elevation were very difficult on a steep ridge with loose scree & rocks. Suggest camping at "Pampa Grande" (4,900m) & starting your summit climb at first light or before. This route could be done in two VERY long days, but we took three, sleeping at 4,600m both nights. The second (summit) day we hiked for over 18hours, 11hours to the summit just in time for sunset, then more than 7hours back to camp. Bring lots of water - I used 8.5litres. Absolutely no snow on the route (January 3-4-5th 2016), a small bit of ice near the top, but probably not good for drinking due to possible high sulphur content. On the way down we walked to the trocha turnoff from where we managed to hitchhike back to Arequipa after a short wait.

First of all I did not summit (I think because of bad acclimatization) but would like to add some tips for climbers who want to attempt this route. Water is indeed a serious problem because you have to carry up plenty of extra kilograms. If you are very fit and well acclimatized you can go in a single push. If you have extra day you can climb up to 4800 meters (until the 'bowl'), hide water along the way and go back to Arequipa. Next day come back with a much lighter backpack and climb fast to the high camp at 4900 m. Reaching starting point is not that difficult, at Puente Grau (very busy transport connection point) catch a minibus on which along with other directions is written 'Embajada'. Price for this ride in 2019 November was just 1 sol. Go to the last stop (S 16.30247, W 71.52331) and from there simply walk up north to the following point (S 16.27674, W 71.51374). This will save you expensive taxi ride of just few kilometers up. The neighbourhood is very poor and you need walking sticks to defend yourself from dogs. It is only relevant until you leave houses behind you. You can find a walking path which goes the right direction and it is easy to follow. The bowl near high camp at 4900 meters is nasty ending of the first day climb. Be prepared for that. I am unable to comment on climbing conditions from the high camp up. PM for some more details if necessary.
