Itinerary description

Second day of a two-day trek in the Chin villages just south of Mindat. We were two people and had a guide with us. The trek started in the place we spent the night (21.319593, 93.890345), in the village of Kyar Ai Nuu. We left just before 9 am, just like in the first day.

The trek was - being honestly - quite boring. Except for a few shortcuts in the first half of the trek, we walked only in small roads that connect the villages to Mindat. In fact, a few minutes after we left a 4x4 car passed us, going from Mindat to Kyar Ai Nuu. It means this route can be done by motorbike on the opposite direction, departing from Mindat, where you can rent a motorbike for a price that varies from 15000 to 25000 kyat. Just please be careful as in several points the road is very bad and can be dangerous, especially if you are two people on the motorbike.

Whether you do this route walking or by motorbike, with or without a guide, or even if you decide not to do it, please don’t miss the 96-year old (as of February 2020) who plays the flute with her nose. It’s absolutely magical! Her house is around here: 21.375099, 93.953822. More information about her in the waypoint.

You’ll find more instructions and general information about the trek in the first route I registered (“Chin villages around Mindat - Day 1/2”).

If you have any doubts just leave your comment. You can also check my girlfriend’s highlighted stories on Instagram (@nadinivacari) to see a bit of what we saw during our trek (and also around Myanmar and Southeast Asia in general).

Enjoy the walk!

Local family house

We stopped here to have lunch with our tour guide. You don’t need to come here, or come if you don’t have food and are hungry, maybe the locals can feed you - pay for it, obviously. Apparently the place is also used as one of the local churches, so I would guess that sleeping here could also be a possibility.

Almost the end of the village actually, it has already started some metres before this point.

Apparently it’s possible to sleep in the monastery, just beside the shrine. Our guide told us that sometimes he brings his clients here. He also said that they even have hot water here.

Support villagers and their local businesses, but please be conscious about the trash your consumption might generate. If you leave any plastic behind it will be there literally for hundreds of years.

Our tour guide said the building you see on the right side of the photo is just a regular house, not a church. The Christian missionaries really succeeded up here.

This is where the dusty road meets the paved road that goes to/comes from Mindat. From this point there’s electricity again.

House of the lady who plays the flute with the nose

Maybe the main reason why we came to Mindat was meeting the old lady - as of February 2020 she is 96 years old - who plays the flute with her nose. She has her face completely tattooed, is absolutely sweet and plays the instrument so beautifully! You’ll be probably received by her daughter and to see her mother doing her show you’re invited to donate at least 5000 kyat. You can film and take photos of/with her with no problems. Giving her extra gifts (a coin from your country, some fruits, a snack) is also highly appreciated. The GPS got a bit crazy while we were visiting her house. Please ignore the big curve, the house is just by the road.
