Itinerary description
This very challenging hike circumnavigates and climbs to the south peak of the “Chinese Mountains”. The route follows Beech’s Mtn. trail most of the way around the south peak before ascending to the summit via the South Chinese Mtn. trail. Descent is via the North Chinese Mtn. trail.
The lower sections are through lovely forest of second growth Douglas Fir and hemlock. At the upper elevations you encounter cedar and pine.
The gem of this hike is the tremendous view from the summit! Westward is Morte Lake and Seymour Narrows and the mountains of the Vancouver Island. The south east view looks down onto Rebecca’s Spit which frames Heriot Bay and beyond that, over Discovery Passage to the distant mountains of the Coast Range on the mainland.
The trails are marked with signs and are generally self-evident. The turn to the trailhead on Hyacinth Bay Rd is marked with a sign. There is a short drive to the trailhead after that over a very rough road.
I would give this hike an American Volksports Association rating of 4 D.
Thank you to the volunteers, organized by the Trails Committee of Quadra Island Recreation Society, that maintain this trail.
