Itinerary description
A stunning walking starting from El Portillo Alto in the Las Cañadas National Park to the Choza Piedras de Los Pastores in the upper Orotava Valley. The walk visits the choza where you can stop and enjoy a break in the shade using the picnic table and benches before the long climb back up to the Mirador Fuente de Mesa. The views thoughout are exceptional, particularly if you are lucky with the cloud cover, as I was. There are also excellent views of La Forteleza and Teide itself. The mirador Fuente de Mesa has further outstanding views into the Orotava valley.
NOTES:
1. After the initial descent into the forest below El Cabezòn, pay attention to the start of the narrow path through the trees. The point where this leaves the main track is not very obvious. The path is also ill-defined in places but re-establishes itself as you descend.
2. The climb up from Choza Piedras de Los Pastores is very steep and very long, do not underestimate this. Make sure you have plenty of water and a sunhat as you will likely be walking in full sun.
