Itinerary description

An interesting walk that takes you to a height of over 1500m right into the heart of the Sierras, through spectacular scenery of mountains and mature pine trees. Ideal for those interested in the flora and fauna of the Natural Park.
There are no real navigation issues as the route follows tracks and paths, although in some locations the path might be less distinct due to vegetation cover.

Venta Cebollero

One of several ruined Ventas that you pass along the old Via Pecuaria. These remote buildings served as wayside Inns providing food and shelter for both man and beast of burden whilst making their way from the coast to Granada.

As you stroll along the track the jagged peaks silhouetted against a clear blue sky are spectacular. Watch out for birds of prey circling above and listen for the sound of choughs. Cabra montes will undoubtedly be watching you from a vantage point amongst the rocks - see if you can spot some.

After you leave this junction behind and begin to contour around the slopes of the mountainside the silence is interrupted by the sound of the Rio Higueron way below.

At the point where the path meets with the burn - a trickle of water amongst white stones, look for a red arrow on a flat stone. This indicates the route bearing sharp right, and you begin to climb up the twisting path. (The path across the burn leads to the ruin of Venta Panaderos.)

Mirador del Agua

As the name suggests, this is an obvious place to rest and take in the extensive view: wooded mountains stretching before you in folds of dark green contrasting with the grey rock of bare peaks and the distant snows of the Sierra Nevada.

A stately pine tree forms an imaginary roundabout at this junction of tracks and paths. If this tree could talk what tales could it tell? Make sure you take the path that doubles back sharp left. Lucero rises up on your left and the conical summit of Cerro de la Mota, 1,649m is across on your right. Your path can be seen rising upwards through the trees between.

There is the opportunity at this point for strong walkers to take in the summit of Lucero, at 1,779m and a classic 'mountain' shape. Commanding views from this summit were not ignored during the troubled years of the Spanish Civil War when a cuartel (barracks) was built on this barren summit. This enabled the Civil Guard to watch upon those below!
