Itinerary description
Curral das Freiras - Pico do Cerco - Pico Grande
(Phone ran out 10 mins before the end, hence why route is not marked as circular. This IS a circular route.)
Very challenging route, only for experienced walkers with proper walking shoes and kit.
Stunning views as you make your way up the 1000m zig zag path to the top. Be prepared for lots of steps and stairs through the Eucalyptus forest.
Once at the top, follow the ridge to both Pico do Cerco and Pico Grande, with a dip down and back up on the way to Pico Grande. This is probably the most challenging section technically, with a few precarious paths along cliff edges.
During the afternoon, from around 14pm onwards, clouds came up from the valley and enveloped the peaks. Visibility is reduced to around 20 metres.
Having passed the path up to Pico Grande (do go up if the clouds have cleared), make your way down a very steep path with a mixture of loose shale and stairs. This path is pretty easy to follow, dripping back down onto the Nun's Valley path, and eventually down into the village of Curral das Freiras.
