Itinerary description
Beautiful coastal hike with rocky coasts, sandy beaches, archeological excavations, pine forest, estuaries, caves, dunes and obelisks. This part of the coast between Son Serra and Son Bauló is free of houses. There are therefore also no restaurants or bars between the two towns, and no facilities at the beaches along the way (except the Son Bauló beach at the west end). You can park for free at the start along the roads (also in Son Bauló). There is little shade on a sunny day, and it can become very hot in summer. Take enough water. At some of the sandy beaches there can be huge plaques of seaweed at the edge of the water and also peculiar sea balls (Posidonia Oceanica).
From the start you take the GR222 trail leaving from the harbor of Son Serra. The path takes you to the beach Platje de Son Real, and you cross the estuary of the Torrent de Son Real. You continue to the Punt Llarga de Son Real with some old buildings and continue on the GR222 behind the beach of Arenal d’en Casat. At the end of the beach you take the path through bushes and pine forest and at the other side you end up with a view of two oblisk-like towers, Torre d'Enfilació, which used to be part of a naval observation system after the civil war. You continue along the coast to the Necròpolis de Son Real, an archeological excavation of a necropolis with over hundred tombs in various shapes. From here you continue to the small beach of Na Patana and a bit further you arrive to the estuary of the Torrent de Son Bauló. Here is also a beach with a bar and umbrellas and the start of the Son Bauló development. You turn back from here, wade through the estuary (shallow in summer) and take a path up a small hill covered with sand, pine trees and bushes. The path takes you back to the coast and you now follow the trail GR222 east, a bit away from the coast line. Near the necropolis you pass a fence on a hiking ladder. You follow a path across minor hills to two caves and a dolmen. You also get close to the second Torre d'Enfilació and go a bit inland to El Camí de l'Illa des Porros. You pass a refuge (not public), cross a gate and walk through the pine forest to beach of Arenal d’en Casat. Here you follow the beach east to the Punta Llarga de Son Real and then on towards the Platja de Son Real. Just before you take a look at the estuary of the Torrent de Son Real, and make a small inland detour. You get back to the GR222 and follow the path back to the start.
