Itinerary description

This is a beautiful stretch of one of the routes taken by the Comet Line; ( a WW2 resistance network dedicated to helping and guiding pilots out of occupied Belgium and France and over the border into Spain). This beautiful walk, climbs south towards the border from Espelette through shady stream gullies and up into open countryside and along the flanks of the Gorramakil and Gorramendi mountains. The first safe house just over on the Spanish side of the border, in the Baztan Valley, is Jauregiko Borda. Jauregiko Borda was run by the Xan Mihura and his wife Matiesa Mascotenea. Xan and his sons, Ignacio and Justo, helped hide and guide the allied pilots after their night crossing over the border and then lead them towards the villages of Amaiur and Errazu and to other safe houses deeper into the Baztan Valley. Eventually, they would be picked up by MI9 and helped out of Spain via Gibraltar and back to the UK.
