Itinerary description
The Constantia Nek Trail is a good alternative to ascending Table Mountain’s back table via the commonly used Jeep track. The single-track footpath runs parallel to the road up past the Eagles Nest corner and on to meet the road again a short way up from the Constantia Viewpoint/Uitkykpunt. From the Constantia viewpoint it’s a short descent through the forest to the Cecelia Ravine Waterfall. Thereafter the path heads down towards Kirstenbosch Gardens and then follows the contour road back to the parking lot at Constantia Nek. The trail is simple and straightforward but there are numerous intersections where a wrong turn can mean missing the sights or adding a few extra kilometers. That being said there are many signposts, maps and trail markers to get one back on track should you decide not to navigate this recorded trail. The trail provides sweeping views over Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs to Muizenberg, False Bay, Cape Hangklip and beyond. The ascent is through fynbos in good condition with ample diversity, after the Constantia Viewpoint its under forest canopy which can provide much needed shade and a potential water refill at the small or main waterfall, these might run dry in summer months so be sure to carry water as a precaution. The contour path back to the parking lot is a mix of forest canopy, Pine and Blue Gum plantation. Near the Constantia Nek parking lot there are ample facilities to stock up on provisions, vendors selling food items, coffee shops, bars and restaurants etc. The parking lot is also a good pickup and drop off spot when using an Uber and there is generally a lot of activity in the area which lessens security risks. Take caution of baboons and having food visible in the vicinity, and take caution especially early in the morning, evening, and if the area is generally quiet. Preferably walk the route in a group and leave any valuables behind if possible. The trail is easy, gradual, non-technical and has no exposure to heights. The only challenges could be a slippery path after rain, sun and heat in summer, and crowds near the waterfalls. This trail should be suitable for anyone who has some hiking experience and a fair level of fitness. Overall, very scenic, close to Cape Town and a worthwhile variation especially if you have walked up or down the Jeep track many times before and are looking for a variation.

The uphill in the beginning was quite long but the scenery from the top was beautiful. The forest section was my favourite, it was lush and green with a small waterfall. It was dog friendly which is great for people looking for a non intensive hike with their 4 legged friend.
