Itinerary description

The Cooloola Great Walk links Rainbow Beach to Noosa North Shore via the eastern high dunes known as the Cooloola sandmass. This one of the largest accumulations of wind-blown sand found along the Queensland coast that has been built up during the last 500,000 years. It conserves unique dune, lake and vegetation systems. This 61,750 hectare section of the Great Sandy National Park is one of the best conserved landscapes of its kind in eastern Australia. This version describes the hike going from North to South. North to south is a better route because the sun tends to fall on your back during the course of the walk.

This is the final day for the first day depending on which way you do the walk. Starting from Brahminy Walkers Camp the track initially precedes east across the dunes before winding it's way back across the gullies between the dunes with a few little ups and downs. There are still some opportunities to get that special for you up the Great Sandy National Park.

Eventually you will come to a T intersection where we dropped our packs and walked up to the top of Mt Saewah. From here you get a good look at the strip of land between Lake Cootharaba and the sea where the track will proceed next.

The track then drops down to Teewah landing and Teewah Beach where we follow the track here across the road and then on to the coastal track that follows the sand dunes just above the beach. At various times you get glimpses of the sea and there are a few spots where you need to tread carefully to avoid water encroachment on the track.

After some distance you will cross the main road into the beach called Beach Rd. This is where the four-wheel drives head onto the beach to head up to Rainbow Beach. At this point because the vehicles cannot turn right the track precedes onto the beach to follow up the beach for another 2K or so.

At a point you will see a tall post with a very small great walks sign on it. It will look like a simple cutting across the dune to the beach so don't miss it or follow Wikiloc carefully.

The track now heads into Arthur Harold Nature Reserve. At the time we traversed the track across to Noosa North Shore this track was very wet and in many places underwater. As the time was spring however, we did get to see many flowers.

The track terminates just after a small section of paperbarks at the end of Maximillian Road at Noosa North Shore. I'm easier day with a little bit of bumpy sand dunes but mostly fast track.
